Commissioned and premiered by the Solano County Honor Band Association to commemorate their 50th anniversary with the composer conducting. Mysterious samplings from the percussion section open while an American Indian flute presents the first theme. As with other works by Gilroy, the composition explores an extensive variety of percussion timbres to keep the piece interesting and always changing. After the introduction, the spirit of the work changes to a lively and festive dance with constantly changing meters which makes the piece come alive. This then winds down to an Indian lullaby, the simple and pensive melody providing a relaxing and welcome change before a dramatic a return to the original festive dance with a slightly modified setting. The final moments of the work are quite fierce with bold and intense percussion accompanying tight harmonies and complex rhythms for an exciting and driving ending..

Creepy Crawley Critters is an entertaining piece that beginning bands will enjoy playing; clarinets dont cross the break, and ranges are within the limits of first-year players. The overall effect is one of a small bug crawling or flying around, annoying the members of the band. The use of ratchet and slapstick adds to the entertainment factor and makes additional fun for percussion students. For even more entertainment value, you may want to consider conducting with a fly swatter or providing several swatters to students to use when they have rests.

This march is played when the members of the group appear on stage. The Dutch composer of the march, Matthias van Nispen tot Pannerden, studied classical saxophone as well as band conducting and composition at the Brabant Conservatory in Tilburg. He is a baritone saxophonist with the Orkest van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht (Band of the Royal Netherlands Air force). He is also active as a freelance conductor and composer.Duration: 3:30

When Karl King was conducting circus bands, he would frequently edit his marches so the same composition could be used for contrasting acts (for example a lion act one time, and a trapeze act the next). In the same spirit, Thomas Leslie has creatively repurposed this familiar march to suit an imaginary clown act; complete with novelty percussion sounds and a few surprises sprinkled in.
