The Four Winds - Evan Hause

The Four Winds by Evan Hause for Concert Band. The Four Winds is an homage by the composer to some of the well-known band composers, such as Clifton Williams and John Barnes Chance, as well as earlier wind masters like Holst and Mahler. Evan Hause was a student of William Bolcom, and his more advanced band work, Tango Variations, has been performed and recorded by some of the top university ensembles. This fantasy-overture is appropriate for the intermediate high school band, contrasting brisk fanfare music with variations on a Romantic theme. (Grade 4) Dur: 6:00.

Symphonic Suite - By Clifton Williams

A suite of five movements with different material. Each movement is associated through the use of one theme. The first, "Intrada," is fanfare-like, and the second, "Chorale," features a trumpet solo. "March," the third movement, is reminiscent of the opening material, followed by "Antique Dance," which has a modal melody. The final movement, "Jubilee," is clearly the most intense. The work is an Ostwald Award-Winning Composition of the American Bandmasters Association and is clearly a repertoire standard. (12:23) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

The Ramparts - By Clifton Williams

Commissioned by the Unites States Air Force Academy Cadet Welfare Fune in commemoration of the Academy's tenth anniversary. Although an overture, it was suggested that a slow, hymn-like section be included to be sung by the Cadets. The result is the inclusion of "What Greater Thing," which appears in the condensed score, for optional use with the band.
