£137.99Hanover Festival - Philip Sparke
The Hanover Wind Symphony, New Jersey, USA was founded in 1984 by its conductor Peter Boor. He commissioned HANOVER FESTIVAL to celebrate the band's 15th Birthday and the first performance took place on October 27th 1999. The piece starts with a solemn brass fanfare. Woodwinds join in and the music subsides into an expressive chorale. A climax is reached and the fanfare returns. Trumpets introduce an explosive vivo section, characterised by an energetic theme from the horns and low clarinets. A bridge passage with strong brass chords leads to a playful section that introduces a legato central theme under woodwind figures. This is taken up by the full band, the playfulmusic returns and the original horn tune is reintroduced. Finally the opening fanfare returns, this time accompanied by music from the vivo section, until a fast and furious coda closes the work.

MASQUERADE was commissioned by Stadtmusik Willisau from Switzerland (Reto Gdel, conductor) to celebrate their 175th anniversary in 2003 and first performed by them in November that year. 1. OvertureThe first movement opens with a fanfare-like figure, featuring the brass, before the main them is introduced over staccato chords. After a short, syncopated interlude a legato theme is introduced in the tenor register and material is developed until the music slows temporarily. The opening theme returns and the 'tenor' tune is taken up by the whole band until the opening fanfare returns to close the movement. 2. ElegyThe slow movement opens intensely with a bare two-part theme, whichleads to a passionate chorale-style melody. A second theme is introduced and leads to a climax, a return of the chorale theme and a pianissimo repeat which again leads to a full-band climax. The two-part theme returns quietly to create a peaceful close. 3 InterludeA short movement which changes the mood to introduce:- 4 FinaleThree violent chords preface a lively syncopated opening theme. The trumpets introduce a second idea, which is treated fugally, and this in turn leads to the main melodic idea of the movement, over staccato chords. A contrasting subject is then introduced in the middle of the band, followed by echoes of the first movement fanfare. The opening theme returns and material is revisited until the opening fanfare returns in full to end the work triumphantly.

£267.99Between the Two Rivers - Philip Sparke
Between the Two Rivers was commissioned by Fanfare 'Prins Hendrik', from Aalst in the Netherlands. The title derives from the fact that the town of Aalst lies between two tributaries of the River Dommel. The community is a highly religious one, so the famous Luther chorale, Ein' Feste Burg, was an obvious choice for Philip Sparke to use as the theme for this new work. It takes the form of a theme with four contrasting variations. Variation 1 is a moto perpetuo, variation 2 has a slower march like feel, variation 3 is a sinister slow movement and the final variation is in the form of a lyrical fugue. Between The Two Rivers is sure to become a major work in modern concert bandrepertoire.

This new work by Philip Sparke was commissioned to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Australian Army Bands Corps. The Roaring Forties is what seamen call the region between the 40th and 50th degrees of latitude in the southernhemisphere (due to the boisterous and prevailing westerly winds). Jan Moretus (1543-1610) was a book printer and publisher in his native city of Antwerp. He worked as assistant to his father-in-law, the renowned master printer and publisher Christoffel Plantijn. After Plantijn's death in 1589 Moretus took over the business.The composition Moretus consists of four parts that draw on the remarkable personality of Jan Moretus aswell as the printing business. In both the titles of the movements and the thematic structure we can see a certain symmetry: a playful allusion to the process of printing.Part 1, A Celebrated Gentleman, describes the illustrious figure of Moretus in a festive chorale. In the second part, ExpressiveImpressions, the printing press itself is brought to life in repeated motifs - despite the industrial, mechanical nature of the process, the product always has an artistic and cultural dimension. In the third part, Impressive Expression, the wind band is invited (or challenged), to intone the slow theme with a poignant expressiveness. Part 4, A Gentle Celebration, is a celebratory finale with a fresh theme.

£94.99Biberussa - Bert Appermont
'Biberussa', the old name of the small town of Beverst in Belgium, is a combination of the words 'biber' and 'ussa', meaning beaver and river. This concert march was composed for the 100th anniversary of the Koninklijke Harmonie (Royal Concert Band) 'Ons Verlangen' from Beverst, a place where the composer had his first musical training. After the opening passage, a proud, heroic theme is heard. As a contrast, it is followed by a simple chorale melody and both themes then appear simultaneously in a grand tutti passage. This is followed by a cantabile trio with a majestic reprise of the main theme bringing the work to a close.

Sentimentale - Satoshi Yagisawa
Premiered by Funabashi Hiagshi High School under the direction of Shinichiro Tagawa in March, 2015, Sentimentale is an excerpt from Yagisawa's Trumpet Concerto. That work, commissioned by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force Central Band with trumpet soloist Kenichi Kurishu, premiered in 2003 with many subsequent performances. In 2013, the Concerto had its U.S. debut with Kagoshima Joho HS and Robert Sullivan, principal trumpet of the Cincinnati Symphony. I received many warm regards and compliments on the work, especially for the second movement. However, I also heard regrets that the interlude required a trumpet soloist. I remembered the words of Mr. Tagawa, who had collaborated with me on works such as"And Then the Ocean Glows" and"Hymn to the Infinite Sky". Ten years earlier he suggested that I arrange that movement for full band so that it could be more widely enjoyed. Though I agreed then, only now have I had the chance to realize this idea, as Mr. Tagawa presented me with the opportunity of this musical creation and world premier.This new arrangement was entitled "Sentimentale" by Mr. Tagawa. I composed the piece with his constant consultation, discussing grade level and instrumentation, and how the work should be a chorale etude for both concert and daily training.
