Through Courageous Eyes - Brian Balmages
This innovative work makes use of an optional piano part that is most likely playable by someone already in the band. It was written in honor of Matt Rhodes, a student at John T. Baker Middle (Damascus, MD), who passed away during a battle with spina bifida. It represents his kindness, courage, and determination despite his confinement to a wheelchair. An opening ethereal section and chorale moves into an exciting portrayal of life which concludes with a humorous ending that was very characteristic of Matt. A very musical new composition which teaches much more than notes.

Isaac Watts (1674-1748) wrote the lyrics of "There is a land of pure delight" and is known as the "Father of English Hymnody". Watts was for the English hymn as Ambrose was for the medieval Latin hymn and what Martin Luther was for the German chorale. He wrote about 750 songs, and some of them survide the ravahes of time. (Joy To The World, When I survey the wondrous cross, I sing the Mighty Power of God) "There is a Land of Pure Delight" is usually in English-speaking areas sung on Luther Orlando Emerson's melody ('Ascription'). Parsifal, written in 1882, was the final opera by composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883). The prelude is a miniature masterpiece consisting of only 116 measures. The form of the prelude is similar to that of the classical three-movement overture and consists of four musical motives: the mystical realm of the Holy Grail; the Grail itself in the Dresden Amen; Faith, represented by the brass chorale; and the Agony of Amfortas. This transcription by John R. Bourgeois faithfully adheres to Wagners intent both in key relationships and orchestration.
