    Wings - By Vince Gassi

The men and women of the Royal Canadian Air Force are the inspiration behind this original composition by Vince Gassi. The first work in his Armed Forces Suite, it takes off with a bright, spirited theme first heard in the flutes. The rest of the ensemble soon joins in the maneuvers and offers a fuller tactical report. Clarinets take over with dignity, providing a lyrical contrast, and are supported by a stately accompaniment. It isn't long before we start to feel the "spirit of adventure" building to a contrasting section conveying images of stealth and intrigue. Covert operations lead finally to a restatement of the opening theme by the brass with flute and clarinet obligato. Interlace with fragments from the covert section and we are carried to a soaring conclusion. If you are looking for a spirited concert opener or closer, look no further! Choreography - By Robert Sheldon

Choreography was commissioned by the 2008 ATSSB All-State Band by the Association of Texas Small School Bands. Written in overture form, the piece draws its inspiration from dance movements found in contemporary stage, ballet and theatrical productions. The piece opens with fast-paced angular gestures accompanied by rapid rhythmical punctuations before yielding to a contrasting lyrical section with long, flowing lines and many opportunities for expressive playing. The infectious beat patterns and memorable melodic content combine to make this an excellent concert opener. (5:33) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Climb the Mountains Tall - By Vince Gassi

Inspired by "The Dream," a poem by Darren Clayton, this work reflects the spirit of adventure necessary to journey to new places and new experiences. After a bold introduction, the flutes, oboe, and bells present a heroic melody with supporting roles provided by the baritone and snare drum. The full band then joins in and expands on the theme, energy building all the while. We journey briefly through a minor key and a slower, more contemplative section. With a transition back to the main theme, and a change of key, we boldly approach the exciting conclusion of our travels. This title is available in SmartMusic.

Vivaldi Concertante - Music by Antonio Vivaldi / arr. John Cacavas

Originally scored for two horns, strings and cembalo, this piece by Baroque favorite Antonio Vivaldi has been defitly adapted for concert band by noted composer and arranger, John Cacavas. By changing the horn parts to cornet and skillfully dividing the melodic structures between the brass and woodwinds (for example, many of the repeated 16thnote passages in the flutes and clarinets have been dovetailed, resulting in a smoother performance that captures the feel of the original string parts), Mr. Cacavas has made this work highly accessible to today's concert bands. A wonderful way to bring the bright, clear sounds of the Baroque period to your concert hall!

Night - By Craig Andrew Fitzpatrick

"Night" is the result of a collaborative project between the composer and the 6th grade beginning band directed by his wife in Morton, Illinois. The students in her band class each write an eight-measure melody as a composition project which is part of the beginning band curriculum. These melodies each start and end on concert B-flat and use only the notes the students have learned on their instruments. The class voted on the best melody, and the winner was "Majestic Night, Oh Winter Night" by Sarah Gunter. The students then observed how this melody was developed by the composer into a concert band piece that they would perform later that year. Compositional terms such as repetition, fragmentation, and augmentation could then be taught to the 6th graders in a new piece for young band that was written just for them. Sentinel Blue - Music by John Cacavas

Sentinel Blue is styled in the manner of the British 'slow march.' The main theme is legato and rich, with long phrasing the key to achieving a successful performance. A forceful transition introduces a repeat of the main theme by the full band. A secondary theme, scored in block harmony, is introduced by a fanfare-like interlude played by cornets. It then modulates back to the main melody in a 'grandioso' style. (Grade 3)
