Children of a Different Sun - Roland Barrett
Opening with a heroic fanfare, this stunning original composition was inspired by the 15th century Inca citadel Machu Picchu and specifically the Intihuatana stone in what is now southeastern Peru where sun worship was favored. Many historians have come to refer to the Inca Empire as "Children of the Sun." The work continues with an intense, almost frenzied, component that sets the stage for an active interplay of contrasting themes featuring a melodic statement interrupted by accented percussive statements. Wind in the Reeds was commissioned by Deena Draycott in memory of John Watson, an army bandsman, teacher and bassoonist. Wind in the Reeds is both a tribute and lasting memorial to John. The piece is largely pastoral in nature, evoking images conjured up by the 'play on words' in the title, but includes a faster central section which exploits other aspects of the character of the bassoon. Transitions between the various sections of the piece are achieved through a series of accompanied cadenzas for the soloist.

Song of Friendship was commissioned by the Concert Band of Jumonji University, Saitama, Japan and their conductor, Yutaka Nishida. The commission marked the 50th year of Yutaka Nishida's involvement with bands as a player, conductor and radio presenter. The ceremonial Song of Friendship opens with an extended fanfare, largely featuring the brass section. This leads to the main theme, which develops slowly until it is played by the full band. A change of key signals a contrasting central section containing a quiet woodwind chorale, which grows until the return of the triumphant sounding main theme. Elements of the opening fanfare then close the work.

Send in the Clowns is one of the most well known songs written by composer Stephen Sondheim. The ironic lyrics have a present-day meaning. It was recorded by the likes of Judy Collins, Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand. Between them all, they brought this song eternal fame. The Norwegian arranger, Richard Johnsen, who is very familiar with this musical repertoire, made this beautiful arrangement and kept it very close to the sound of the original version.

This work was composed as a commission by the Aikodai Meiden High School Symphonic Band, for the 50th anniversary of their annual concert; the title A Golden Jubilation is a reference to this. The close friendship between Hiroki Ito, theconductor of the band, and Satoshi Yagisawa resulted in this brilliant and exhilarating fanfare of approximately two minutes in length; the piece is ideal to use as a concert opener. The original composition was arranged for an extremely wide rangeof instruments and a band of 200 musicians, including a separate 'banda', harp and a variety of special instruments. This new version has been rescored for standard band instrumentation by the composer himself.
