Hope Remains Within - Zachary Cairns

Pandora opens a jar (in seemingly more accurate translations) and releases numerous evils, diseases and other pains into the world, but one thing remains within the jar: hope. Why does hope remain within? Why doesn't it come out and help humanity? Why was it included with all those evils in the first place? Zachary Cairns wrote this piece to engage these unanswered questions. This dramatic concert selection encourages students and listeners to consider their own ideas of what hope is.

    The Hornet's Nest

In 1780, Lord Charles Cornwallis attempted to invade Charlotte, but the city's residents united and expelled him. General Cornwallis went on to describe the city as "a hornet's nest of rebellion." In this Revolutionary War inspired piece, a strong florid melody is passed around the various sections of the ensemble. This work is a great opportunity for more advanced bands to focus on stylistic playing between the bright and triumphant theme and quieter larghetto passage. Students will enjoy taking a trip back in time with this piece full of Colonial American vigor.

    Bravery and Grace

This new piece from composer George Sweet is a delightful combination of Scotland the Brave and Amazing Grace. Each tune on its own is wonderful, but in Sweet's setting, they are masterfully layered to reflect the composer's Scottish-American heritage. This presentation of a Scottish melody with Americana-inspired harmonies is a stunning example of compositional craft.
