    Aquarium - Johan de Meij

The Suite 'Aquarium' is Johan de Meij's third composition for symphonic band and features six tropical fishes, each of them represented by a motif, and surfacing as such in several guises. The composition consists of three movements of which the second and third merge uninterruptedly into each other. I) Allegretto grazioso (Neon Tetra, Electric Eel and Angelfish) II) Andante / Adagio (Sea Horse and Zebrafish) III) Finale: Allegro giocoso (Guppy & Co.) The Neon Tetra motif functions as a kind of 'Leitmotiv' and descibes the beautifully coloured, frisky fish: A number of variants have been derived from this theme and will also appear in the other movements. The Electric Eel in fact is not represented by a motif, but by a rhythm based on the restless electric pulses made audible in some aquaria. The Angel fish is represented by elegant cluster chords. In the second movement the Sea Horse emerges out of the water vegetation and starts a dialogue with the Zebrafish, which is represented by one melodic phrase in unison, getting more and more threatening by added parallel fifths and octaves. Simultaneously with the Sea Horse motif the Neon Tetra theme emerges, this time in 3/4 time and in Eb minor. The third movement starts with only two instruments (trumpet and xylophone), but as it is often the case with Guppies their number rapidly increases. Piccolo and Alto Saxophone introduce the Guppy Theme followed by several instrumental combinations. Every theme from the first movement 'swims by' once more, after which the principal motif leads us to a brilliant ending.

    The Pioneers - Philip Sparke

In The Pioneers Philip Sparke salutes the bicentenary of an expedition by two all time American heroes - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were commissioned by US President Thomas Jefferson to find the headwaters of the Missouri and a route to the Pacific following the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the USA. They set out as the 'Corps of Discovery' from Louisville, Kentucky, in May 1804 and not only did they succeed in reaching the Pacific through hostile territory, but also found their way back - in 3 years! The piece is not descriptive of the journey but gives the composer the opportunity to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this amazing feat. Add a touchof the wild-west to any concert with this exciting work.

    Predator - Thierry Deleruyelle

The peace of a mountain village is shattered by a dreadful rumour: whether animal or something more disturbing, a creature is said to be prowling the area. After a quiet beginning, the music builds up with tense, nervous lines: fear sets in. The soundscape becomes fantastical, almost like a Halloween night. The villagers gather to hunt down the beast, with the orchestra conveying their determination through clear and energetic writing. The chase accelerates, breathless and spectacular, up to an uncertain outcome: the creature vanishes, without anyone having seen it. The initial chorale returns, calmer but not reassuring. The village regains its tranquillity, while retaining the memory of a mystery that has never been solved.

Souvenir De Porto Rico - Louis Moreau Gottschalk

Gottschalk didn't live long enough to leave a large catalogue, but the works he brought to the public were quite popular in their day. This is one of his more well-known works, skillfully rendered for band by Michael Brignolo. It brings the vivid colors and sounds of the Caribbean to life.

    Forevermore - Thomas Doss

The work Forevermore was commissioned for a wedding; it describes the themes of friendship, partnership, and loyalty. One of the most beautiful things in life is going through it together and maintaining the bond of love forever. This solemn work opens with warm woodwind sounds and a soft percussion accompaniment, followed by a build-up to a colourful tutti passage. After a gentle middle section, a grand tutti sound develops again, but the work finally ends in an almost intimate atmosphere.

Arioso Cantabile - Jan Van der Roost

This composition exudes serenity and tranquillity, but also intensity and expressiveness - giving it similar qualities to earlier works by Van der Roost, like Canterbury Chorale and Adagio for Winds. Long melodic lines characterize the main themes that arise in different registers and develop through varying keys. The band rather sounds like an organ: the varying timbres and broad musical phrases fully justify the comparison with this majestic instrument. There is no bombast, and the work contains no exaggerated technical or rhythmic tours de force. On the contrary, from a lush richness it moves towards a softening final passage that culminates in a slowly fading final chord: following the many warm harmonies and grand melodies, this work concludes in a contemplative mood.

    Adventus - Scott Watson

Adventus, meaning "arrival" or "debut" and celebratory in nature, was written to showcase the playing achievements of students. After a bold fanfare statement, the main theme is developed (first playfully, then with more grandeur). A contrasting moment of calm transitions to the exciting return of the opening theme, followed by triumphant closing material. Written squarely for Grade 1 players but with an attractive, mature sound that belies its level, Adventus, by Scott Watson, would make the perfect concert opener or closer. (2:30) Correlates to Sound Innovations, Book 1, Level 5.

    Soothsayer - Eric Rath

Soothsayer, by Eric Rath, is a study in contrast and mood. Music with a mystical and otherworldly tone portrays a soothsayer--an oracle, fortune teller, or diviner. Mostly in 3/4 time and primarily built on the octatonic scale (half and whole steps alternating), the percussionists also get to have a heyday with this one. Students not only get to show off their technical side but work to develop smooth, flowing lines and a maturity to balance the most important part at any given moment. Enjoy the ride! (2:55)
