James Rae is the man who put fun into woodwind and brass teaching. His many compositions, especially in the jazz and blues idioms, have often featured on examination syllabuses. Recent years have seen his publications of easy flexible ensembles for younger players and now he turns his attention to the wind band. In his new series "The Concert Band Collection", he has written exciting new pieces for the standard concert band line up. Attention is given to each instrument so that the technical and musical requirements do not exceed UK Grade 2.5. An optional piano part will provide "stuffing" and moral support for the young players who will quickly enjoy James' catchy and imaginative music. As the title suggests, this is a fiery and energetic, dynamic overture. Jan Van der Roost was commissioned to write the piece by the Japanese 'Band of the NEC-Tamagawa Plant' on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. From the first measure, the brass section sets the scene with rhythmical motives. Gradually we hear melodic and playful themes, often supported by (poly)rhythmic figures. A fermate in the trombone section prepares the way for the final theme, which virtuosically leads into a reprise of the first fanfare. The dynamic circle closes!

The term passage can variously describe a passageway of travel, a musical phrase, or perhaps the soul's moving on from this world to the next. A rapid flourish in 12/8 time opens composer Otto M. Schwarz' first Concerto for trumpet Trumpet Town, written in October 2009. The metric changes that follow affect the pulse rhythmically and melodically, in exciting and unexpected ways. The solo trumpet's displays of technical prowess and bravura alternate with the film-score-like tutti sections of the brass ensemble. The slow, almost elegiac, central section can be performed on the flugelhorn, while the closing reprise demands that both the soloist and the orchestra give of their best as the piece comes to an exciting, colourful, and uplifting finale. High Voltage - Thierry Deleruyelle
High Voltage is an especially energetic composition in the big band style. The blaring brass and the ornate interplay of the woodwinds lend this work great character and conviction. In the second half of the piece two solos are played: firstly the tenor saxophone (alternatively alto saxophone), followed by a virtuoso variation in the trombone (alternatively baritone or euphonium).
