Based on the famous Canadian Brass version by master arranger Luther Henderson, here is a wonderful adaptation for concert band by Michael Brown. Opening with a bluesy medium swing feel, the tuba section is featured on the melody along with a small group of players. Mid-way through the arrangement, the style changes to an up-tempo Dixieland style with the melody cleverly traded between various sections of the band. This rousing number is sure to be a favourite.

Commissioned for the 50th Birthday of Paul Patterson, the composer has taken the letters P, A, U and L and adapted their Morse Code dots and dashes as a basis for the piece. Combinations of rich brass writing, juxtaposed with florid upper wind writing, provides a stimulating piece for an intermediate level band. Every band program should incorporate marches into their regular concert programming, and here is an excellent march from John Moss that will rehearse easily and sound great. Written in a stately moderate tempo, it opens with a majestic brass fanfare followed by a statement of the melody by the clarinets. After a contrasting theme is introduced, we return to a harmonized version of the opening fanfare for a powerful finish.

To A New Dawn was commissioned by the United States Continental Army Band - Captain Timothy J. Holtan, Commander and Conductor.The brief was for a piece to celebrate the 3rd Millennium and it was the composer's aim to provide a work which, as well as looking forward to the challenges of the new century, also contained moments of reflection about the last one.After a bright introduction featuring the trumpets a perky theme, passing quickly through several keys, appears on the woodwinds. A solo trumpet takes up a new theme over bubbling quavers (eighth notes) and this leads to a rhythmic figure on low clarinets, followed by the upper woodwinds. A brass interlude follows and, after a short bridge passage, an oboe takes up a contrasting legato tune that builds to a climax.An andante section follows with solos for horn and flugel horn (or trumpet) and a florid flute cadenza. A passionate climax leads back to the faster music and, eventually, to a full recapitulation, revisiting the earlier material before a lively coda close the work as it began.Duration: 9:40
