    Three Meditations - Erik Morales

Abstract, musical, thought provoking these all describe this innovative one-movement work by Erik Morales. Staggered entrances in the brass set the stage for the main theme, and the use of minor chords gives the work the sound of a fantasy film score. This is an excellent way to teach concepts of texture, tension, and release, while engaging your students with some extremely creative writing.

Dies Irae - Elliot Del Borgo

This symphonic poem is based on a chant attributed to Jacopone da Todi (c. 1230 1306) and describes the day of wrath and impending doom, while asking for mercy and salvation. The opening, treated like a Gregorian chant, soon moves into a whirlwind of energy as a large battery of percussion adds to the bold statements in the brass and flourishes in the upper woodwinds. A substantial work for your next concert program.

    Family Fugue - Timothy Loest

Inspired by Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, Family Fugue uses a narrator to blend the familiar folk song Frere Jacques with a delightful story line of the misadventures of three characters: Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion. An educational gem, this innovative work is ideal for teaching major and minor tonality, melodic retrograde, dynamic contrast, and of course, fugue form. Consider using a school administrator or local celebrity as your narrator. Easy to put together, great for recruiting, and forever memorable! (4:24)

    Mr. Sandman - Pat Ballard

The Emmylou Harris version of Pat Ballard's Mr Sandman was an international hit. In this arrangement Klaas van der Woude shows this song is also perfectly suited for three instrumental soloists (saxophones) with brass band accompaniment. The special close harmony effect is obtained by a tight three-part arrangement of the melody. Effective use of percussion, particularly the vibraphone, gives this version the same feel as the original.

    Arctic Funk - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen

Arctic Funk might just as well have been a flashing sequel to a scene from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. Popular music but with a difference, as indicated by the title. The work's quiet section temporarily soothes down the heated passion of its two corner movements, but everywhere else action is required throughout. The work was commissioned in 1991 by Troms? Brass. Situated just above the Polar Circle, Troms? is one of Norway's northernmost towns. Topographically, the town probably comes across as freezing cold, but Troms? is famous for its 'warm' night-life. The Composer: In Arctic Funk you might get a feeling of a party that takes place betweenice-rocks and snow-capped mountains.

    Sonata - Derek Bourgeois

This work, composed in 1998, was commissioned by the American trombonist Don Lucas as a work for trombone and piano and first performed by him in Birmingham on 19th May 2000. Subsequently, I arranged the music for both solo trombone and brass band and solo trombone and wind band so that it now exists in three formats. The first movement, in B flat major, is brisk and energetic, and is cast in sonata form. The second subject is gentler and more lyrical. The second movement, a scherzo in C major, is the most complex of the four. Basically the structure is a rond. For a long time the music remains in the opening 5/8 time until a new theme introduces more broken rhythms in a more jazzy idiom. After a return of the opening theme the following episode is more tonally ambiguous. Finally, the main theme returns to round off the movement. The third movement, a lyrical adagio, is really one long extended melodic flow. The harmonies are lush and the textures simple and direct. The tonal center is A minor, but the music meanders through so many keys, that this key centre is heavily disguised. The finale is a fiery affair. G minor is really its home key, but throughout the movement the music moves about a lot and the second subject is first heard in A flat minor. The movement's underlying sonata structure is masked not only by its loose tonality but also by its frequently changing time signatures. Like the first movement the second subject is more lyrical in nature and for a while it seems that the music will end peacefully, but a final flurry heralds a triple forte unison on the home note of the first movement - B flat. Sir Eu - Thomas Doss

Sir Eu was commissioned by the regional music authority of Upper Austria and the brass band SoundINNBrass. The composition was meant to be very virtuoso and was written for the euphonium player Steven Mead, who premired it and has played it regularly worldwide. The title Sir Eu alludes to the master of the euphonium himself, and also to the concept of Europe. From jazz through romanticism to folkloristic elements - this work offers everything that the musical heart could wish for!

Concerto for Trumpet No. 1 'Trumpet Town' - Otto M. Schwarz

A rapid flourish in 12/8 time opens composer Otto M. Schwarz' first Concerto for trumpet Trumpet Town, written in October 2009. The metric changes that follow affect the pulse rhythmically and melodically, in exciting and unexpected ways. The solo trumpet's displays of technical prowess and bravura alternate with the film-score-like tutti sections of the brass ensemble. The slow, almost elegiac, central section can be performed on the flugelhorn, while the closing reprise demands that both the soloist and the orchestra give of their best as the piece comes to an exciting, colourful, and uplifting finale. Soloist: Difficulty 5This piece is also available for trumpet andpiano.
