Program NotesBased on the song melodies "Give Me Joy in My Heart, Keep Me Praising" and "Praise, My Soul the King of Heaven," the music is largely light-hearted in nature with some florid semi-quaver work overlaying the melodic lines and some interesting interplay between the two selected tunes. We believe that it will have wide appeal both to players and listeners.Andrew Mackareth originally wrote this piece for The Salvation Army's Symphonic Wind Ensemble, but it was first published in a rescored version for brass band. We are please to be able to release it in its original form in this collection of wind band music.

Meditation on St Clement - David Chaulk
Inevitably, comparisons will be made with Philip Wilby's setting of the same hymn tune so It's interesting to note that this arrangement was done in 1983 - ten years prior to Wilby's very fine arrangement. Many will be familiar with the children's song Jesus Bids Us Shine on which it is based.The piece is very light-hearted in character, and would easily lend itself to the addition of some imaginative choreography that could prove extremely entertaining and amusing on the right occasion!In its original brass band form, the piece was written for The Salvation Army's Melbourne Staff Band when they toured the UK in 2001. It was used to great effect by the band on that trip.

Cryptogram (krip-to-gram): anything written in cipher. Cipher (si'fer): a secret code.Commissioned for the 50th Birthday of Paul Patterson, the composer has taken the letters P, A, U and L and adapted their Morse Code dots and dashes as a basis for the piece. Combinations of rich brass writing, juxtaposed with florid upper wind writing, provides a stimulating piece for an intermediate level band. The finale to the work superimposes both elements for a grand ending.
