Northern Lights - Alan Lee Silva
Featuring a lovely and appropriate use of mallet percussion instruments, especially bells and other delicate members of the percussion section, Northern Lights is evocative, melodically distinguished and cleverly scored to help a young band sound its best. The contrast between the natural minor of the woodwind melody at the beginning and the grander, major mode brass theme introduced later is nicely maintained throughout this very effective piece.

Dies Irae - Elliot Del Borgo
This symphonic poem is based on a chant attributed to Jacopone da Todi (c. 1230 1306) and describes the day of wrath and impending doom, while asking for mercy and salvation. The opening, treated like a Gregorian chant, soon moves into a whirlwind of energy as a large battery of percussion adds to the bold statements in the brass and flourishes in the upper woodwinds. Dual (for euphoniums and band) was commissioned by Robbert Vos and Anteun Hoesen of Altena Brass, the Netherlands. Pearce strived to write a fun, melodic and challenging piece that showed off the vast range and virtuosity of these fine players. The octatonic scale forms the harmonic basis for much of the piece, which is a musical competition or race between our mighty Euphonium soloists! Rapidly ascending and descending atonal lines create constant drama for both soloists and band, culminating in a more expressive and tonal ending.
