Although Frigyes Hidas (1928-2007) composed in every genre, he gained international fame and recognition principally with his chamber music for brass instruments and his works written for wind ensembles and wind orchestras. In 1995 he was invited to WASBE, the international organization of wind ensembles, and in the final decades of his life, which were rich in commissions, he travelled the world as a competition jury member, guest of honour at festivals and visiting university professor. Full of humour and extremely effective, Merry Music is one of his best-known and most popular works.

Nearly 400 years ago (in 1609) Henry Hudson and his ship, the Half Moon, explored the majestic river that was later to bear his name. Half Moon on the Hudson pays tribute to this area of New York and the spirit of exploration and adventure. A regal fanfare announces the beginning of the work, followed by an energetic and rhythmic section that features various sections of the band answering one another. An emotional and chorale-like middle section provides a calmer mood along with lush harmonizations. James Rae is the man who put fun into woodwind and brass teaching. His many compositions, especially in the jazz and blues idioms, have often featured on examination syllabuses. Recent years have seen his publications of easy flexible ensembles for younger players and now he turns his attention to the wind band. In his series The Concert Band Collection, he has written exciting new pieces for the standard concert band line up. Attention is given to each instrument so that the technical and musical requirements do not exceed UK Grade 2. An optional piano part will provide "stuffing" and moral support for the young players who will quickly enjoy James' catchy and imaginative music. Each volume contains two titles. Buffalo RockThis piece has been specifically composed for bands in their early stages of development. All instrumental parts have been written in comfortable keys and ranges with all clarinet parts staying entirely in the low register. After a short, powerful introduction, the music immediately kicks in to a driving rock mode, setting the scene for the remainder of the piece. Strong rhythmic playing is required from all sections of the band in order to achieve a solid performance. A Royal PortraitThis piece is very regal in style and portrays all the pomp and circumstance that surrounds a high-profile state occasion. It is to be performed with a full, warm sound and players must resist the temptation to overblow as this could have a detrimental effect on tone quality and intonation. As with Buffalo Rock, the instrumental parts have been written in comfortable keys and ranges with all clarinet parts staying entirely in the low register.

French Chanson, arranged by Steven J. Pyter, is a rousing arrangement of a famous 16th-century choral work. The tuneful Renaissance art song tells a light-hearted story of gossip and rumor, with lyrics roughly translating to "I will tell you!" The story centers around a jealous husband suspicious of his beautiful wife. Like opera, the piece employs dramatic and whimsical characteristics to tell a passionate story. This arrangement alternates between tutti statements and short interludes to feature each instrument family in the band---woodwinds, brass, and percussion. The intensity and playfulness make for a great concert opener! (1:40)

This concert march with a solemn and festive character was commissioned to Gauthier Dupertuis by the the Musikkapelle Altheim e.V (Germany) to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The thematic material of the first section of the march is based on a three-note motif, proclaimed by the brass in the first measure. The second part of this theme presents a recurring motif throughout the piece. This first section has a festive and resolutely giocoso character. The trio presents a new, more lyrical and solemn theme. After a short divertimento based on the material from the first section, the theme returns in a majestic way, leading to a climactic finale. Altheim: a concert march perfect for a festive occasion!

Columbus is a brilliant and dynamic overture with a soft and melodious central passage. The composer was inspired by the European space laboratory Columbus that is part of the International Space Station. In this lab, hundreds of scientific experiments are carried out on a yearly basis. This work was commissioned by the Brass Band Bourgueillois, which was founded ten years ago and has since been a 'laboratory' of musical creativity. In response to the many positive reactions to this attractive work, the composer has now also produced a version for concert band.
