Five States of Change (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire. The composer writes:The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing*, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine and astrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life. An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues. I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle.*in full Wu zhong liu xing zhi chi or the five types of chi dominating at different times.- Philip SparkeDuration: 12:15

Diversions on a Theme of Paganini (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lane, Philip - Noble, Paul

This work is made up of eight short movements and was originally scored for brass quintet, being commissioned for performance by the London Gabrieli Ensemble. The full orchestra version was made in 2000 for a commercial recording by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia conducted by Gavin Sutherland, and the band arrangement was completed in 2009. The title is important in that the pieces are more musings than variations on the famous theme. The introduction stands somewhat apart, rather in the way the opening of Dohnanyi's Variations on a Nursery Tune does, and the subsequent diversions play with the theme, or parts of it, in movements lyrical, bombastic, or plain frivolous. The individual titles of the movements are self-explanatory, except to add that the last one always reminds the composer, for some reason, of final credits going up at the end of a film or television programme. Titles of the eight movements: 1. Introduction and Theme; 2. In Pieces; 3. Toccata; 4. Chaconne; 5. Cortege; 6. Popular Song; 7. Five-A-Side; 8. Epilogue. This piece will be a great workout for your band, with lots of opportunities for soloists, some rhythmic challenges, and great emotional stretches.

The Lords of Greenwich (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sheldon, Robert

Written in the style of an authentic British folk tune, this is an original composition inspired by the music of Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams. A jaunty theme greets the listener at the outset of the piece, followed by a lyrical and expressive ballade. A brief transition culminates in a musical statement that recalls the music of a British military brass band, which is then accompanied by the original thematic material bringing the piece to a definitive conclusion.Duration: 4.45

The Enemy God and the Dance of the Spirits (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Prokofiev, Sergei - Van der Beek, Wil

The Russian ballet director Sergei Diaghilev commissioned many composers to write music for the theatre. This was what caused Serge Prokofiev to compose the four part Scytische Suite (also known as Ala and Lolli) in 1916, from which The Enemy God and the Dance of the Spirits can be heard on this CD. This suite is one of Prokofiev's first works, and received negative criticism following its first performance on account of its being "uncivilised". Prokofiev himself wrote after this first performance "...The timpani player beat the skin of the timpani to tatters, and the whole orchestra voiced a protest. A cellist complained that he only put up with the violence, created by the blaring brass, on account of his sick wife and three children...".Duration: 3:00

A Taste of Honey Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Ever heard of Tijuana Taxi, Spanish Flea or A Taste of Honey? Even if these names do not ring a bell, everyone has certainly hummed along when hearing these pieces on the radio. These titles were made famous in the 1960s by the trumpeter Herb Alpert and his band Tijuana Brass and are still extremely popular today. This arrangement is full of surprises with exciting fragments, sparkling and catchy passages and colourful instrumentations. A part for electric guitar intensifies the swinging feeling of the piece, but is not obligatory. This arrangement will definitely get the audience in a party mood. 02:50
