Viva Excelsior - Wim Laseroms
Wim Laseroms composed Viva Excelsior on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of music society Excelsior in Losser (the Netherlands). After a powerful tutti entry, the percussion section bridges the period up to the first reprise. This festive march is then followed by a playful melodic theme in which the semi-quavers prevail, accompanied by a beautiful legato countermelody in the horns and euphoniums. During the second reprise a marcato bass solo and a technically sparkling and dynamic contrasting phase alternate. The trio features a new theme - starting from the chalumeau register and leading to an exuberant repeat in the brass with ornamentations by the high woodplayers.

A Nottingham Festival - Philip Sparke
This celebratory work, which Philip Sparke wrote for the 20th anniversary of the Nottingham Concert Band, starts with a hymn-like theme played as a fanfare in the brass. With a change of mood from 'solemn' to 'merry' and back to 'majestic', together with an unusual orchestration, in which may different instruments feature and in which at points the entire wind orchestra shimmers in tutti passages, A Nottingham Festival is a real pleasure for musicians and public alike.

In Memoriam: For the Fallen - Philip Sparke
In Memoriam: For the Fallen was commissioned by Bolsover District Council for the Bolsover Brass Summer School 2014. It is a setting for narrator and band of Laurence Binyon's (1869-1943) poem, For the Fallen, which was first published in The Times in September 1914. Binyon was dismayed at the outbreak of war and especially concerned by the large number ofcasualties suffered by the British Expeditionary Force in the early months of the battle on the Western Front. Too old to enlist, he volunteered as a hospital orderly in France. The poem is known world-wide as the famous fourth stanza (They shallgrow not old...) has become a regular part of Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day services. In Memoriam: For the Fallen is a musical accompaniment to the poem, shadowing the mood of each stanza.

Febesa - Filip Ceunen
The title of this work, Febesa, refers to the four notes it is based on: F, E, Bflat (BES in Dutch) and A. At the beginning of the work, the sound of these notes creates a mysterious, extraordinary atmosphere. The work slowly builds from the low brass as the thematic torch is handed to the woodwind section and this leads into a grand tutti. In a tonal and refreshing allegro, the febesa-theme now has a more harmonic role. After this passage, the symmetric form of the work brings us back to the mysterious atmosphere of the introduction, with solos for euphonium, oboe and flute.

Entrance Of The Queen - Teo Aparicio-Barberán
This short but brilliant work was written to honour the crowning of the Spanish queen. The elegant march of this piece depicts how the queen arrives slowly. The queen is subsequently crowned and this can be heard in the heavy chords of the brass instruments. The spectacular ending of this work is the proverbial cherry on the cake of this ceremony.
