Emperata Overture - Claude T. Smith
This is the composition that started it all! "Emperata Overture" is a wind band classic for concert and festival alike. The original publication of this work established Claude T. Smith's use of the 7/8-time meter as his signature rhythmic device for instrumental ensembles. This flexible arrangement allows ensembles to perform the work with as few as fourteen musicians providing accessibility and flexibility for numerous instrumentation needs, while still allowing a full ensemble sound.The posted recording is based on the full band scoring but aligns with the suggested preferences for either woodwinds/strings or brass suggested in the score.

Bite the Bullet by Mexican-American composer Jorge Machain was named 2019-2020 winner of acclaimed "The American Prize" for music, in addition to being a finalist in the 2018 NBA Revelli competition. The work was inspired by a painting by Venetian artist, Carlo Marchiori, which depicts two 'Pulcinelli' (Venetian clowns) engaged in a gun battle. As the bullets meet in the middle of the scene, a colorful and vibrant cloudburst is created. Using a unique sonic color scheme, the brass and percussion portray the gunshots, while the woodwind flourishes emulate the painter's vibrant brush strokes.Commissined and recorded by the UNLV Wind Orchestra Thomas G. The Wilderness - Rossano Galante
The wilderness is a dark, musical journey that captures the beauty and harshness of a cold, snow covered forest in the mountains. The main theme,stated by winds, captures the solitary feeling of the vastness of the landscape. This theme is interrupted by dissonant brass ostinatos. After the full orchestra reiterates the main theme, the work transitions to a lyrical, melancholy theme. This is the wilderness at night when it is dark and solitary. The piece continues with a fast, dramatic theme capturing a sense of danger that the inhabitants of the forest create. The piece concludes with the full ensemble recapitulating material from the main opening theme.

Commissioned by the Gamma Eta chapter of Phi Mu Alpha, at Furman University, Greenville, SC, this impressive work is built around two chorale themes and a recurring fanfare. After the boldly stated opening, a bright allegro developmental section becomes increasingly more intense until a dramatic cadence is reached. At this point, antiphonal brass (3 trumpets, 2 trombones) soar above the ensemble and play a grandiose version of the first chorale. The band re-enters and both ensembles play the climactic ending to the work, in a new key, and with both hymns being heard simultaneously. Marvelous work! (6:00)
