Triumphal March (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Mussorgsky, Modest - De Meij, Johan

The opera-ballet Mlada was an epic project involving six different Russian composers including Mussorgsky, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov. Unfortunately the work didn't ever receive a performance however the festive march assumed a life of its own in an orchestration by Rimsky-Korsakov. This has remained one of Mussorgsky's lesser known works however it has been given a new lease of life with this fine arrangement for concert band. Duration: 5.15

Russian Easter Overture Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Rimsky-Korsakov composed his three greatest orchestral works over a short period: he completed Capriccio Espagnol in 1887, and he composed Russian Easter Overture in 1888, simultaneously with the symphonic suite Scheherazade. Russian Easter Overture is a magnificent overture in a single movement that was dedicated to the composers Borodin and Moussorgsky. Several hymns of the Russian Orthodox Church create a characteristic atmosphere. Arranger Tohru Takahashi has made the sound even more colourful by using several mallet percussion instruments. 0:16:00

Selections from Boris Godunov Wind Band Set (Score & Parts) - Takahashi, Tohru

Composer Modest Moussorgsky (1839-1881) came from the prosperous environment of Russian nobility. In 1865, after his officer's education, he joined the guard's regiment in St. Petersburg. Here he met a number of well-known colleague-composers, including Balakirev, Cui, Rimsky- Korsakov and Borodin. They strived to develop a "classical style" of composing while at the same time retaining a strong Russian influence. His opera Boris Godunov tells the tale of Boris, who with the support of the people, declared himself Tsar, but totally fell short of the role. The opera became popular in the re-orchestrated version produced by Rimsky-Korsakov in 1896. Tohru Takahashi has used the beautiful musical themes of this opera in Selections from Boris Godunov - a captivating work for concert band. 0:11:40

The Great Gate of Kiev Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

The Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) was self-educated to a large extent but went on to become one of the ?Mighty Five? which also included Balakirev, Cui, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov. Today he is considered the innovator of Russian music par excellence. He composed Pictures at an Exhibition in 1874, inspired by ten pictures produced by his then recently deceased friend, the Russian architect and artist Victor Hartmann. The French composer Maurice Ravel made an orchestration of Mussorgsky?s composition in 1922 which is now more well-known and more performed than the original piano suite. For his transcription of Pictures at an Exhibition, Tohru Takahashi made use of the original piano composition by Mussorgsky. The Great Gate of Kiev, issued here separately, is probably the best known melody from this classical masterpiece. 0:05:45
