This brilliant programmatic work from the pen of Rob Romeyn is an incredible display of beauty, sensitivity, emotion and vigorous intensity. The journey begins on the morning of the great 1868 Hawaii earthquake. Peaceful and beautiful sounds of the black sand beach of Punalu'u are heard as the sun rises. The music then develops, first with a statement of the traditional melody "The Earth Is Our Mother" to remind us to respect Mother Earth and be mindful of her incredible powers. As the tempo quickens we are musically transported into the events of the fateful day, as the earthquake and resulting Tsunami ensued. As the movement of the earth subsides, we return to the beach of Punalu'u as Mother Earth begins her renewal of new life. Certain to become a classic for concert and festival use, this is music of highest quality!

Volcano is a work commissioned by the Municipal Wind Orchestra of Endingen in Germany. The three creative impulses which provided the basis for this symphonic poem are inspired by outside sources. They are closed linked with the history of the Orchestra and the region in which it performs. In this region is the Kaiserstuhl, an enormous rock situated on the edge of the Black Forest. This three movement suite was inspired by the composer's reading of Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone. The work is based on a tone row taken from the musical letters contained within the title. "Black Pointed Hats" in D minor sets the scene, with the bass instruments playing an accented form of the tone row. Note clusters and chromatic movement help to create the mysterious sound palette for listeners to let their imagination run riot. The contrary motion in the upper woodwinds at the beginning of "Spells" gives a mesmerizing effect. The third movement, "Flying Broomsticks," evokes the image of young wizards flying around, using chromatic runs and various accented sections where the flying is not so smooth. Both themes used in this movement combine to form a grand flypast!
