Commissioned by the Starlight Band of Tulsa, Oklahoma, here is a piece that brings a broad palette of sonic colors to the concert hall. The light and spritely opening evokes images of darkening night skies as one by one the stars appear. Soon, as with the ever-growing number of stars, the instrumentation grows into an expansive mural, filling the halls with sounds as colorful and full as a clear starry night. Then, just as it started, the sounds begin to fall off and disappear, gradually fading out just as the stars before the approaching light of day.

Glorious ruins still ariseII characterizes this civilization from glory, to destruction, to the present with its buried ruins. To begin, stone cities wait silently cloaked in jungle, steadfastly eluding discovery. As time passes slowly, the music reflects back to the glory of the Maya. Though wishing to turn back the hands of time for this incredible civilization, its fate and the gravity of its loss are carried forward in the profound silence of eternal loss. Cesarini composed this work as a tribute to the memory of Darius Milhaud, born a century earlier in Aix-en-Provence, France. The premiere, conducted by the composer, was presented by the Civic Philharmonic of Balerna in December, 1992. The titles of the four-part suite include: La Villageoise (The Village Maiden), Le petit berger (The Little Shepherd), La Princesse (The Princess) and Le Lutin (The Imp). The numerous musical reference themes begin with five folksongs from the Provence region and continue with melodies written by French composers of the seventeenth century. Additional interest is created by the use of old dance forms (Ronde, Musette, Pavane and Farandole) toillustrate each historical character.
