The town of Schwenningen at the source of the Neckar inspired Wolfgang W?ssner to compose this march song. In the trio he employed Friedrich Silcher's well-known folk song Am Neckar. The march is composed in 6/8 time throughout, with the folk song theme likewise arranged in this meter. Nerval's Poems is based on four poems from the collection Odelettes by the French poet G?rard de Nerval (1808-1855). This psychotic poete maudit lived in the realms of his imagination, where he identified himself with fairy-tale princes and Oriental heroes. In Nerval's Poems, Jacob de Haan has composed the themes directly to the rhythm of the texts. Thus the work can be performed instrumentally or with a vocal soloist or unison choir. As the title suggests, this work is a partita: it consists of a number of variations on a chorale melody. The partita has been popular for centuries, especially when it comes to organ music. Henk van Belcum, who is active in the choir world, chose for his Partita Piccola the German hymn Wunderbarer K?nig as a starting point. Partita Piccola consists of four variations and a choral setting. After a majestic opening fanfare, the second variation follows, based on a canon by Pachelbel. H?ndel's Sarabande is the basis of the third variation. Next comes the chorale setting, after which the work ends festively with a dance that has been written in the form of a courante. Partita Piccola is an asset for church services and for concert platforms. 0:08:00

Remembrance Day Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Remembrance Day (Totengedenken) is a chorale-like piece in memory of those who have died in service. Jacob de Haan composed this work for a concert by the symphonic wind orchestra Symphonic Winds, which he conducted in Germany on Volkstrauertag (national remembrance day). The composition is based on a text from Totengedenken (Commemoration of Those Who Have Died). This narrative text is provided in four languages, and is intended to be spoken (using a microphone) ad libitum during the performance. The movements of the mass ordinary as we know it have now been composed in various pop styles that have their origin in the gospel music. We hear, then, not only the classic American gospel style (including the characteristic clapping and swing rhythms), but also freer gospel styles that have developed over the course of time. After a dark and menacing opening a solo trumpet introduces a theme which will eventually become the centre of a piece and is soon heard tutti in a lyrical form. This is interrupted by a return to the opening mood, with only a brief respite in the form of a chorale for clarinet choir and harp. The theme tries to return once more in a rousing, somewhat cinematic version, but again the sense of foreboding overtakes it. An unsettling march-like section follows before the theme returns in its most lyrical and gentle guise, introduced by solos in the woodwind section. Eventually, a maestoso statement which erupts into a presto coda, ends the journey in a triumphant, more optimistic blaze of sound.Duration: 10.00
