£149.40Norwegian Dance No. 2 - Alfred Evensen
Alfred Evensen (1883 - 1942) was born in Troms, but moved to Harstad 16 years old to start as a student at The Military School of Music. He was director and chief of the military band in 1918, and worked there for 12 years. In 1930 he was appointedto conductor of the military band in Bergen, and worked there until he was appointed to take over from Johannes Hanssen (Valdres march) as manager and conductor of the military band in Oslo in 1934.With this band he participated in a majorinternational military music collection in Paris in 1935 With a great success. In addition to his work in military music, he was a highly respected conductor of choir and composed, in additionto his compositions for bands, many songs for choir.He died in Oslo, after he was arrested because of his resistance against the German occupation. At his own request he was buried in Harstad, and there is also a statue of him.Norwegian Dance No. 1 and No. 2 dates from 1911 and 1912respectively. They are composed in the style of Grieg's Norwegian Dances, Op. 35, but, unlike Grieg, Evensen has used his own themes for the compositions.

To The Stars! - Nigel Hess
'To the Stars!' is the fruit of a unique collaboration between Nigel Hess and the children of several Bedfordshire schools who were asked to contribute ideas for a libretto based on the themes of space travel and exploration. The work was then performed during a concert at the Royal Albert Hall showcasing the work of Bedfordshire County Music Services. The unusual combination of children's choir and symphonic wind band is wonderfully exciting, and To the Stars! provides an incomparable performing experience for both band and choir, and is also technically demanding and challenging. After a rousing introduction, we hear a countdown to our rocket's 'blast off', and suddenly we are heading out to the planets where we meet aliens with blue eyes and pink ears! After a brief but terrifying skirmish with a black hole we head off to a 'world of many wonders', and as we leave our solar system behind, the piece finishes with a spectacular shout of 'Fly with us - to the stars!'.

The piece is a sanguine sounding work entirely based upon variations in several keys of a main hymn. This creates a festive and 'sprituoso' atmosphere throughout this impressive, highly colourful and energetic work. This selection was commissioned by the Central Oklahoma Band Directors Association for the CODA Ninth Grade Honor Band. After an energetic opening, a lyrical legato section is introduced by a woodwind choir and answered by a brass choir before returning to the original excitement of the opening section. A beautiful slower section in 3/4 time follows before the opening section returns, taking the piece to a strong, bold ending.
