The Star and a Rose is a big-scale Christmas piece for band, featuring four seasonal chorales.The first is a Gregorian-like chant Hodie Christus natus est.In this section of the piece, a soloist can be placed away from the band, maybe on a gallery. The soloist can be a tenor instrument, maybe trombone, or you can feature a vocal soloist.After this, the music leads us on to the old German Christmas chorale Lo, how a rose e'er blooming. This song is given a fairly rhythmical treatment, but make sure that the melody is presented in a cantabile style.An interlude follows, before the piece presents one of the most used and loved Scandinavian Christmas chorales, Mitt hjerte alltid vanker (My Heart will always wander), composed by the Danish bishop Hans Adolph Brorson around 1732. This song is building towards a climax, before the solo horn brings it all down to the Stable view described in the lyrics.Then comes a transition that brings us in to the final section of the piece, which presents the international Christmas Carol Adeste Fideles. As many will notice, I have borrowed a section from David Wilcocks majestic harmonization towards the end.The title of the piece has its background form the lyrics in My heart will always wander, where the text speaks about the stars in the sky. But also in the latin text for Adeste Fideles:Stella duce, Magi, Christum adorantesThe Rose is of course from the lyrics in the chorale Lo, how a Rose.

Strausss Waltz Du und Du (You and You), published around the end of 1874, is based on motives from the operetta Die Fledermaus (The BaT) and named after one of its melodies, the famous chorus of Act II. The introduction, in triple meter(3/4), never modulates away from its basic key, F major. Du und Du contains 3 waltzes, each of them in the traditional structure ABA. After the third and last waltz, the piece concludes with a coda that elaborates fragments from the previouswaltzes.

Composer, flutist and conductor Franz Albert Doppler (1821-1883) descends from a musical Austrian-Hungarian family. Together with his brother Karl, who was a flute virtuoso, he travelled extensively around Europe. Arranger Gottfried Veit has arranged this appealing duet for concert band with two flutes as soloists. It is a fine addition to the repertoire and an ideal work to spotlight you flautists.

Flamenco is a style of music, usually played on the guitar to accompany dancing and singing, that has its home in Andalusia in southern Spain. It has its roots in the years of Moorish rule of the region (711-1492) although the modern flamenco style dates only from the 18th century. La Caracola (which is the Spanish name for the triton sea shell) is an annual festival of flamenco that takes place around the region's capital, Seville, annually in May. This piece does not contain any traditional flamenco melodies but does capture wonderfully the colour, passion and energy of this seductive music in a 'must-have' work for Beginner Bands.

A Monmouth Overture was composed in 2007 for the Haberdashers' Symphonic Winds, as part of Philip Sparke's year as composer-in-residence at the Monmouth school. The work is based around the 15th century Agincourt Song, written inhonor of Henry V's victory over the larger but outdated French army. Bert Appermont composed the music for the first ever open-air musical, the Seed of Satan, which was shown for the first time in August 2002, in Kruibeke, Belgium. This gigantic spectacle which evolves around witchcraft at the beginning of the 17th century, attracted more than 10,000 spectators in just a few weeks. Bert Appermont subsequently arranged a suite of the highlights from the musical which he has called Saga Candida.

In 1936 he signed an agreement with Warner. Steiner, considered the father of symphonic music in Hollywood style. One of his most famous and popular masterworks is, without any doubt, Gone with the Wind (1939). The movie was an immediate success and won ten Academy Awards. In spite of the years passed, this movie still moves young audiences around the world. Lorenzo Bocci has chosen the song Tara's Theme from this movie and turned the romantic music into an arrangement for concert band.

Vittorio Monti was born on January 6, 1868 in Naples (Italy). His musical education (violin and composition), he enjoyed at the conservatory there. Around his 30's Monti went to Paris. He earned a living as a conductor and wrote several ballets and operettas. In his last years, Monti died in 1922, he devoted himself to teaching and composing. His famous "Czardas" has made his name known even today. Initially the czardas was a Hungarian folk dance , but after the mid-nineteenth century it was even a dance for the upper-class. Czardas begins with a slow introduction, the Lassan (slow and sad), and then the fast part, Friska, follows. Czardas is not, as somany people think typical gypsy music.
