As the title implies, there is a dichotomy of spirit within the contrasting sections. But, there is also a mutual thematic development which makes this composition unique. After beginning with a lyrical introduction in which the trumpet invokes an expressive solo passage, the work then progresses with an energetic rhythmic pattern which offers and leads to a joyful spirit of celebration. A recapitulation of the original theme forms a variation to the end. This distinctive composition was selected by the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation to receive the NJSCA Fellowship award. Very nice!

Johan de Meij's first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. The fifth movement expresses the carefree and optimistic character of the Hobbits in a happy folk dance; the hymn that follows emanates the determination and noblesse of the hobbit folk. The symphony does not end on an exuberant note, but is concluded peacefully and resigned, in keeping with the symbolic mood of the last chapter, The Grey Havens, in which Frodo and Gandalf sail away in a white ship and disappear slowly beyond the horizon. Jamaica Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean. In 1494 it was discovered by Christopher Columbus, who used it as private property until 1509. After some skirmishes it fell under British rule and the sugar trade on the island flourished. After the abolition of slavery in 1834 it was only granted Home Rule in 1944, but it remained a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Whereas the export of cane sugar used to be Jamaica's main export product for many years, nowadays music has taken over this role. At first American music used to be very popular on the island. Later, however, Jamaican musicians started to experiment and thus in the end created their own musical style called Reggae. Well-known Reggae musicians are Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. The most important instruments used in Reggae are the bass and the drums. Together they form the base for the style: the riddim. A bass drum accent on the second and fourth beat are characteristic of a typically reggae drum beat. To this syncopic patterns are often added. The rhythm guitarist plays chords in a characteristic Reggae rhythm, not on, but between the beats. 02:30

Night is the result of a collaborative project between the composer and the 6th grade beginning band directed by his wife in Morton, Illinois. The students in her band class each write an eight-measure melody as a composition project which is part of the beginning band curriculum. These melodies each start and end on concert B-flat and use only the notes the students have learned on their instruments. The class voted on the best melody, and the winner was "Majestic Night, Oh Winter Night" by Sarah Gunter. The students then observed how this melody was developed by the composer into a concert band piece that they would perform later that year. Compositional terms such as repetition, fragmentation, and augmentation could then be taught to the 6th graders in a piece for young band that was written just for them. Duration: 2.30
