Gayenah Dance Suite No.1 (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Khachaturian, Aram - Snoeck, Kenneth
Selected from the ballet Gayaneh, these three colorful examples of Aram Khachaturian's writing for ballet are based on rhythms and melodic motives from different ethnic groups, ranging from the very Slavic Ukranian "Gopak" (Hopak) to the Armenian "Dance of the Maidens" and the Kurdish "Mountaineers' Dance." They vary in instrumental color and tension from festive and party-like, through sultry and romantic, to tense and almost angry. These may be performed in any combination - a single stand-alone dance movement, a contrasting pair, or all three in a complete set. Birthday Madrigals was written in 1995 to celebrate the seventy-fifth birthday of the great jazz pianist, George Shearing. This arrangement is written for combined band and choir, but may be performed by band alone. In honour of George Shearing's noted style, a vibes part has been added to this arrangement, as well as an optional piano part. The original setting was a suite of five movements. The arranger has chosen three of the movements, numbers 1, 3 and 5, because of their similarity in style. This is a special opportunity for Concert Bands, or combined Concert Bands and Choirs, to perform in a true jazz medium, featuring a set drummer and string bass along with the full band.

Capriccio (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Holst, Gustav - Noble, Paul
The following notes have been excerpted by the arranger from those presented in the Introduction by Imogen Holst, daughter of Gustav Holst: Holst wrote this work in the spring of 1932, while he was guest Lecturer in Composition at Harvard University. He had been asked by Nathaniel Shilkret to write 'a short radio piece, not longer than five or six minutes.' for a composers' series on folk music themes. Holst wrote to me on 13 May 1932, saying: 'On May 1 I started sketching a piece for Shilkret's Radio jazz band in New York. I finished the sketch on the 4th and the full score on the 8th... Shilkret wanted something on American airs but I've left them out because I prefer my own so he may reject the thing.' Shilkret was enthusiastic about the piece, but he was unable to use it for his series. 'I hate to give it up,' he told the composer, 'but I cannot play it because it is not based on a definite English or American folk theme.' Holst never revised his hurriedly-written work, probably because he had too many other things to write during the remaining two years of his life, when he was having to spend a good deal of his time in hospital. The autograph manuscript of his original full score is in the British Library, MS Add.47833. The work had no name: Holst referred to it either as his 'Jazz band piece' or as 'Mr. Shilkret's Maggot.' The score needed editing. There were gaps and patches, with incomplete dynamics and phrase marks. I made the version for orchestra and named it 'Capriccio' in spite of the viola's (now saxophone's) expressive opening, because from the moment of the marimba's first animated remark there can be no doubt about the mood of the music. - Imogen Holst (1968)

Christmas Night is John Rutter's setting of a traditional French Carol, with words by John Rutter. It became the theme of one of his Christmas albums, focusing on the central event of the Christmas story, the birth at Bethlehem, and on the characters in that story: the angels, the shepherds, the wise men, and the mother with her child. This arrangement is written for combined Concert Band and Chorus, but may be performed by Band alone. The arrangement is technically very easy, and is a showpiece of the colours and textures of the families of band instruments.

In Dulci Jubilo (Concert Band with Optional Choir - Score and Parts) - Noble & Rutter
One night in 1328, the German mystic and Dominican monk Henrich Suso (or Seuse) had a vision in which he joined angels dancing as the angels sang to him Nun singet und seid froh or In Dulci Jubilo. In Suso's biography (or perhaps autobiography), it was written: Now this same angel came up to the Servant [Suso] brightly, and said that God had sent him down to him, to bring him heavenly joys amid his sufferings; adding that he must cast off all his sorrows from his mind and bear them company, and that he must also dance with them in heavenly fashion. Then they drew the Servant by the hand into the dance, and the youth began a joyous song about the infant Jesus, which runs thus: 'In dulci jubilo', etc. In Dulci Jubilo is among the oldest and most famous of the macaronic songs, one which combines Latin and a vernacular language such as English or German. Five hundred years later, this carol became the inspiration for the 1853 English paraphrase by John Mason Neale, Good Christian Men, Rejoice. Perhaps the earliest English version appeared c.1540. That popularity has endured for nearly 700 years. It's the rare contemporary collection of Christmas carols that doesn't contain a carol based on this ancient jewel.

Major Barbara (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Walton, William - Noble, Paul
Major Barbara is social satire in three acts by George Bernard Shaw, performed in 1905 and published in 1907, in which Shaw mocked religious hypocrisy and the complicity of society in its own ills. Barbara Undershaft, a Major in The Salvation Army, is estranged from her wealthy father, Andrew Undershaft, a munitions manufacturer. Although The Salvation Army condemns war, it gladly accepts a large donation from her warmonger father, and she resigns in protest. The Army offers the poor only salvation, while Undershaft takes steps toward eradicating poverty. Barbara later comes to accept her father's views on capitalism and to believe that the greatest evil is the degradation caused by grinding poverty. Major Barbara was filmed in London during The Blitz bombing of 1940. During air raids, the crew and cast repeatedly had to dodge into bomb shelters. The film's producer-director, Pascal, never stopped the production and the film was completed on schedule. William Walton composed the film score, which was later arranged as a concert piece for orchestra by Christopher Palmer, from which this arrangement for Concert/Wind Band has been made.
