Virginia Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes.The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section. Steps Ahead is a work by Michael Gandolfi that takes young players on a journey! Along the way, there are musical elements that are intended to educate the performers about basic compositional techniques that are intended to educate the performers about basic compositional techniques. John Bourgeois, Director Emeritus of the United States Marine Band, past president of the American Bandmasters Association, president of the John Philip Sousa Foundation, American vice president of the International Military Music Society, mentor and friend. "Favor And Treasure" is based on "John's Theme," a bold, original theme conveying inspirational imagery of excellence, artistry and duty congruous with Col. Bourgeois' distinguished career at the helm of the band to which President Thomas Jefferson gave the title "The President's Own." To honor Bourgeois' affinity for Cajun folk music, the old Cajun waltz, "J'ai Passe Devant Ta Porte" is also used, most prominently in the quasi-zydeco section of the work. Musicians and audience members of all ages will be assuredly affected by the spirit and essence of this extraordinary composition.

The beautiful song Shenandoah is an early American folk song dating back to at least the early 1800s. Its been known by several different titles, including Oh, Shenandoah and Across the Wide Missouri. Clearly a part of American tradition, it remains one of Americas most enduring and popular folk songs. This arrangement has been carefully arranged for the ability of young players but will also sound great with more experienced ensembles as a warm-up or lyric concert selection.

Hoe Down -from Rodeo - Aaron Copland
Aaron Copland (1900-1990) has been called the Dean of American Composers. He was one of the first composers to use American folk idioms in his music. Hoe Down is taken from the ballad Rodeo, composed in 1942. From the ballet,Copland extracted Four Dance Episodes to form an orchestral suite for the concert hall: Buckaroo Holiday, Coral Nocturne, Saturday Night Waltz, and Hoe Down. Hoe Down uses the square-dance tunes of Bonaparte and McLeod's Reel.Polyrhtyhms are derived from the jazz idiom - thus, making the work light, humorous, and full of zest. (3:00)

The Royal Hawaiian - Robert W. Smith
A march composed in a classic American style, The Royal Hawaiian is based on the famous "Aloha Oe" composed by Queen Lili'uokalani in 1878. Featuring American military percussion as well as traditional Hawaiian instruments including optional conch shell, the blend of musical textures creates an unusual yet familiar march setting. If Sousa had surfed, we believe this is what he would have heard!
