A Canadian Trilogy - Music by Steve Hodges

The majesty of the great North is put to music in this carefully scored composition in three movements. The first movement, "Pride of the Northland," is broad and flowing in nature. Lower woodwinds and brass begin the melody and upper woodwinds contrast with a soulful counter melody. "Native Beauty," the second movement, is relaxed and sweeping while the third movement, "Harvest Celebration," features a strong trumpet melody, exciting full-band scoring and a vibrant conclusion. Throughout the work there are simple melodies and rhythms layered with sonorous counter melodies which sound more difficult than they really are.

Mussorgsky! - [The music of Modest Mussorgsky] / arr. L. C. Harnsberger

Modest Mussorgsky (1839--1881) was a relatively unknown composer during his lifetime, but some of his works are among today's best-known pieces in concert halls and films. His orchestral work Night on Bald Mountain was immortalized by Walt Disney in Fantasia, and Pictures at an Exhibition is one of the most performed pieces by symphony orchestras. Selections from these two pieces are wonderfully transcribed for young band in Mussorgsky! The arrangement begins with the mystical opening from Night on Bald Mountain which transitions to the hauntingly beautiful conclusion of that same work. To conclude is the "Great Gate of Kiev" from Pictures at an Exhibition which is one of music literature's most inspiring moments. (3:30)

A Redmond Legacy - Music by Mark Williams

This clever new piece from Mark Williams has musical ideas that are inspired by some of Washington state's most famous legacies. A recurring rhythm uses long and short notes to spell out (in Morse code) the name of the first operating system created by Redmond's most famous computer software company. The main theme begins with a four-note pattern that brings to mind an advertisement by one of the hardware companies most closely associated with this operating system. The second, more songlike theme is a highly decorated version of the folk song "Billy Boy," a tongue-in-cheek way of honoring the area's most famous individual. At one point in the music, all three of these themes are played at the same time (the Morse code rhythm, the main theme, and "Billy Boy") to simultaneously honor all of the legacies in Redmond.
