Two Schumann Marches
Two favorite marches from Robert Schumann's Album for the Young have been tastefully arranged by John Cacavas for the young concert band. Two Grenadiers, the stately martial ballad begins with a processional air, but offers many contrasts. A cheerful melody opens the Soldier's March which is scored with more transparency and emphasis on individual sections. These short marches offer a pleasant alternative for any concert program. The Trattamars (Tratta March) was originally written for 'Il trattamento miracolo', an ensemble of five, performing light-hearted musical acts for the young and the old. This march is played when the members of the group appear on stage. The Dutch composer of the march, Matthias van Nispen tot Pannerden, studied classical saxophone as well as band conducting and composition at the Brabant Conservatory in Tilburg. He is a baritone saxophonist with the Orkest van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht (Band of the Royal Netherlands Air force). He is also active as a freelance conductor and composer.

This piece is based on 4 songs from the island Man. The first, The Good Old Way, is an old and typical Air, mostly written in Dorian mode. The biggest part of the song is probably added aroun 1882, after the introduction of the primitive Methodism on the island.The second song, on which the faster part of the piece is composed, is a real Folk tune: The Manx Fiddler. Chaloner, a seventeenth century writer, found out that the island of Man's population felt very much attracted to the violin and that in almost every family someone played the instrument.The third song, Sweet Water in the Common, is about dike boards and the last part is a beautiful old hymn, The Harvest of the Sea, sung by fishermen after their safe return.

£149.40Joyful Life - Jerker Johansson
When Jerker Johansson in the 80's started to compose he was for a while obsessed with writing music in odd time signatures, more specifically 7/8. He was asked during the fall of 2020 by Leif Karlsson (former member of the legendary percussion ensemble Kroumata and nowadays conductor) to write something challenging for Uppsala Blsarsymfoniker and this resulted in Joyful Life. The piece is, to say the least, difficult to tap the pulse along to and is something of a baptism of fire for the musicians, regarding rhythmic precision. Joyful Life is dedicated to the always likeable Leif Karlsson (Joyful Leif!) and was premiered on the 15th November 2020 by The Swedish Air Force Band under the baton of the composer.
