Ascendance - Robert Thurston
A dynamic concert overture that derives most of its force and material from the striking fanfare motive announced in the opening measure by horns and trumpets (concert Eb, Bb, Ab, Db). The bold opening in compound time is followed by a suave and flowing Adagio in 4/4 meter that makes a lovely tune out of a variant of the opening motive. At measure 103, with a marimba solo, the Allegro style and compound meter return for a rousing and invigorating climax. £129.99Aquarium - Johan de Meij
The Suite 'Aquarium' is Johan de Meij's third composition for symphonic band and features six tropical fishes, each of them represented by a motif, and surfacing as such in several guises. The composition consists of three movements of which the second and third merge uninterruptedly into each other. I) Allegretto grazioso (Neon Tetra, Electric Eel and Angelfish) II) Andante / Adagio (Sea Horse and Zebrafish) III) Finale: Allegro giocoso (Guppy & Co.) The Neon Tetra motif functions as a kind of 'Leitmotiv' and descibes the beautifully coloured, frisky fish: A number of variants have been derived from this theme and will also appear in the other movements.The Electric Eel in fact is not represented by a motif, but by a rhythm based on the restless electric pulses made audible in some aquaria. The Angel fish is represented by elegant cluster chords. In the second movement the Sea Horse emerges out of the water vegetation and starts a dialogue with the Zebrafish, which is represented by one melodic phrase in unison, getting more and more threatening by added parallel fifths and octaves. Simultaneously with the Sea Horse motif the Neon Tetra theme emerges, this time in 3/4 time and in Eb minor. The third movement starts with only two instruments (trumpet and xylophone), but as it is often the case with Guppies their number rapidly increases. Piccolo and Alto Saxophone introduce the Guppy Theme followed by several instrumental combinations. Every theme from the first movement 'swims by' once more, after which the principal motif leads us to a brilliant ending.

Suite - Boudewijn Cox
Suite for symphonic wind band is a rich orchestral piece that taxes the musicians to the utmost. The first part starts with a lyric melody in the French horn section, to be taken over by the full orchestra, ending in a kind of "anarchistic entrada". The second part starts with a transparently orchestrated polyphonic web, slowly passing into a richly arranged wave like movement that stops suddenly, leading to the third part's "attaca" start. This third part is a fragile "adagio con tenerezza". The finale is extremely virtuous and feriocious. It is a musical expression of anger, fear and despair.

£75.00Sonata - Derek Bourgeois
This work, composed in 1998, was commissioned by the American trombonist Don Lucas as a work for trombone and piano and first performed by him in Birmingham on 19th May 2000. Subsequently, I arranged the music for both solo trombone and brass band and solo trombone and wind band so that it now exists in three formats. The first movement, in B flat major, is brisk and energetic, and is cast in sonata form. The second subject is gentler and more lyrical. The second movement, a scherzo in C major, is the most complex of the four. Basically the structure is a rond. For a long time the music remains in the opening 5/8 time until a new theme introduces more broken rhythms in a more jazzy idiom. After a return of the opening theme the following episode is more tonally ambiguous. Finally, the main theme returns to round off the movement. The third movement, a lyrical adagio, is really one long extended melodic flow. The harmonies are lush and the textures simple and direct. The tonal center is A minor, but the music meanders through so many keys, that this key centre is heavily disguised. The finale is a fiery affair. G minor is really its home key, but throughout the movement the music moves about a lot and the second subject is first heard in A flat minor. The movement's underlying sonata structure is masked not only by its loose tonality but also by its frequently changing time signatures. Like the first movement the second subject is more lyrical in nature and for a while it seems that the music will end peacefully, but a final flurry heralds a triple forte unison on the home note of the first movement - B flat. Elegy - Melvin L. Shelton
A touching and intense memoriam piece, the mechanics are on the easy side of Grade 4, but the demand for tone quality and control in tenuto passages and long slurred phrases calls for the best of musicianship from any group. The "Adagio e Rubato" tempo indication invites the kind of wonderfully expressive ensemble playing that should probably make up a larger part of band literature than it does today. Over a quiet unifying heartbeat from the timpani, the band explores the emotions felt after a tragic personal loss. A soaring F Horn solo (cued in Trumpet. and Alto Saxophone) leads poignantly toward a gentle Orchestra Bells and Wind Chime ending.
