The expression comes from the great poet Bjornstjerne Bjornson where he in the poem Siste sang (Last song) describes a battle between a tiger and a horse. The tiger symbolizes the big city (Oslo) while the horse symbolizes the countryside, ie the traditional battle city vs country. Hence Oslo (Kristiania) got the negative nickname Tigerstaden (Tiger City), but as time went on, the name established itself as something positive and familiar, and has become a beloved nickname, without negative associations, in the Capital. I wrote Labyrinth to celebrate the 450th anniversary for the city of Fredrikstad. The Danish king Fredrik II agreed to establish a new town further down the river Glomma, to make it easier to defend from the Swedes. The piece is a network of quotations mixed with my own pitch material. My versions of the quoted melodies are not authentic, and sometimes hard to recognize. However, the different quotations give the music an aura of tonality. For example, a dance tune composed by the Flemish composer Mattheus Le Maistre (1505-1577). The melody also occurs in the first danish book of hymns written after the reformation. Since Norway for 400 years was a part of Denmark and everybody had to write and read Danish, they used much of the same music, too. I also use regular Danish hymn tunes and quote from a religious folk song from the area around Fredrikstad. The military signals I use are authentic (for example, The Old Danish March), and I am very sure they were used in the Old Town (the fortress) of Fredrikstad. The drums quote from The Downfall of Paris. This could have been heard played by professional soldiers hired by the Swedes from Scotland. This song was originally written for the 1965 TV special "A Charlie Brown Christmas", Charlie Brown is known from the comic strip, "Peanuts". "Christmas Time is Here" has been performed by a multitude of artists since, among them: Al Jarreau, Steve Vai, Take 6 and Kenny Loggins. This arrangements i based on Diana Krall's version from the 2005 Album "Christmas Songs". The arrangement has many chamber-musical passages where a soloist is playing with a small group, please mind the balance and thin out if needed. Also: Do take liberties in tempo and direction of this music to make it flow naturally and not stand still. Duration: 3.15

The classic "Coventry Carol" is an English Christmas carol from the 16th century. The haunting melody became more widely known in1940, after Coventry was bombed by the German Air Force during World War II. On Christmas Day, the BBC broadcasted a service from the ruins of the Coventry Cathedral that included a dramatic choral performance of the work. This single broadcast with the song's melancholy lyrics gave new meaning to the carol, cementing its place in our holiday repertoire. Robert W. Bernstein's Mass is a monumental 90-minute work, written in 1971 for the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. In this suite commissioned by the Canadian Brass and the Eastman Wind Ensemble, arranger Michael Sweeney focuses on a select number of movements, often using the brass quintet to represent the vocal lines found in the original. The striking and beautiful work includes Alleluia, Sanctus, the well-known A Simple Song, Agnus Dei, Offertory and Almighty Father. Although scored for brass quintet and wind ensemble, ample cues are provided to allow this to be performed by a wind ensemble or symphonic band alone. Duration: 15.00

Reflections by Robert Langenfeld, was commissioned by a consortium (alumni/friends/family/UCM Bands/ CTS Pubs) for Dr. Russell Coleman in celebration of his 90th birthday and his service as director of bands at the University of Central Missouri (CMSU) for 32 years. Langenfeld was given guidelines for the composition which included a clarinet soli (Coleman is a clarinetist), excerpts from "Dance Prelude" (commissioned by Dr. Coleman and the UCM Phi Mu Alpha chapter, written by Claude T. Smith for the CMSU (UCM) Band in 1978), the UCM Alma Mater and the UCM fight song, "Go Mules." This work was premiered on June 17, 2018 by the Warrensburg Community Band, under guest conductor, Dr. Anthony Pursell, at the 2018 Missouri Bandmasters Association Summer Convention at Tan-Tar-A in Osage Beach, MO. Dr. Russell Coleman has been the conductor for the Warrensburg Community Band since 1985. Duration: 5.30

Silent Night (German: Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht) is a popular Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. It was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011. Over the years, because the original manuscript had been lost, Mohr's name was forgotten and although Gruber was known to be the composer, many people assumed the melody was composed by a famous composer, and it was variously attributed to Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven. However, a manuscript was discovered in 1995 in Mohr's handwriting and dated by researchers as c. 1820. It states that Mohr wrote the words in 1816 when he was assigned to a pilgrim church in Mariapfarr, Austria, and shows that the music was composed by Gruber in 1818. This is the earliest manuscript that exists and the only one in Mohr's handwriting. The song has been recorded by a large number of singers across many music genres. This haunting setting by David Willcocks also includes slight textual alterations to the piece that has been translated into about 140 languages. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.
