This highly popular Scottish song (subtitled A Ballad of Home) was in fact composed by a Canadian, Laura Gertrude Lemon (15 October 1866 - 18 August 1924) who lived and worked in England, with words by a Londoner Wilfred Mills (the pen name of William Alfred Braund) who never set foot in Scotland. It was first published in 1905 and has subsequently become a favourite for Scots remembering their homeland when far away from home. This arrangement for band combines careful orchestration and some warm harmony to enhance the beauty of the melody.Duration: 2.50

Like the Eagle, We Soar and Rise was commissioned by Yuying Secondary School Concert Band and Yuying Alumni Association for the 2010 centenary of the school's foundation. The piece was named by a friend of the composer named Steven Phua, who originally suggested commissioning a new piece to Satoshi Yagisawa. The piece furthermore takes its name from the text of the Yuying Secondary School song.This composition is based on three different concepts: the first one demonstrates 'The founders' passion for education'; the second concept illustrates 'Hardship in war time'; the third one 'To the future' describes the inner strength people find to overcome struggles. This piece concludes with a fanfare, which is the sound of hope that leads to a brighter future in a positive direction.The world premiere of this piece was conducted by Faizal Bin Othman, who is one of the leading educators in Singapore, and was performed by the Yuying Secondary School Concert Band.Duration: 8.00

In taking a lateral look at Bizet's famous Farandole, I decided to omit the full opening statement of the old Provencal tune Marcho dei Rei (March of the Kings), opting instead to make oblique references to it. The combination of this old Christmas song with another traditional Provencal Melody Danso dei Chivau-Frus (Dance of the Hobbyhorse) originally made by Bizet's friend Ernest Guiraud when he compiled Suite No.2 from Bizet's music to the play L'Arlesienne.The farandole is a traditional Provencal dance in which men and women hold hands in a chain and wind through the streets following a musician playing pipe and tabor. In the case of Danso dei Chivau-Frus, the lead dancer would wear a horse's head made of papier mache or something similar.I have attempted to stay true to the spirit of the Farandole and the contrapuntal devices added by Guirand while adding a few touches of interest and harmonic colour here and there.- Rob Wiffin

The Huron Carol is Canada's oldest Christmas carol, written in 1643 by Jean de Brbeuf, a Jesuit missionary. The melody is from a tradition French folk song, Une Jeune Pucelle (A Young Maid). Intended as a gift and teaching aid to the Huron people, Brbeuf wrote the lyrics in their native language. The program notes are included for each of the five movements: 1.The first movement refers to the source of the River Thames, with its rippling accompaniment figures. 2.Badminton House is a picture of the world-famous Horse Trials, with an archaic touch here and there to point to the House itself. 3. Pittville Park is the largest open space in Cheltenham, England, with Gustav Holst's birthplace at one end and the famous Pump Room at the other. The composer remembers childhood walks there and varying degrees of catching newts and the like in the central lake. 4. Cleeve Hill is the highest point in the Cotswold chain, just reaching a thousand feet above sea level at one point, making it, officially, a mountain, albeit a gentle one. Nevertheless, the extremes of weather through the seasons are reflected here, with an ominous note or two suggesting Belas Knap, an ancient burial ground sited nearby. 5. The final movement takes the traditional Gloucestershire wassail song, heard at Christmas, and manipulates it through any number of filters and distortions. (Note: Some harp parts are doubled, some are more essential. If no harp, the part can be played either by electronic keyboard or piano.)
