Like the Eagle, We Soar and Rise was commissioned by Yuying Secondary School Concert Band and Yuying Alumni Association for the 2010 centenary of the school's foundation. The piece was named by a friend of the composer named Steven Phua, who originally suggested commissioning a new piece to Satoshi Yagisawa. The piece furthermore takes its name from the text of the Yuying Secondary School song.This composition is based on three different concepts: the first one demonstrates 'The founders' passion for education'; the second concept illustrates 'Hardship in war time'; the third one 'To the future' describes the inner strength people find to overcome struggles. This piece concludes with a fanfare, which is the sound of hope that leads to a brighter future in a positive direction.The world premiere of this piece was conducted by Faizal Bin Othman, who is one of the leading educators in Singapore, and was performed by the Yuying Secondary School Concert Band.Duration: 8.00

The program notes are included for each of the five movements: 1.The first movement refers to the source of the River Thames, with its rippling accompaniment figures. 2.Badminton House is a picture of the world-famous Horse Trials, with an archaic touch here and there to point to the House itself. 3. Pittville Park is the largest open space in Cheltenham, England, with Gustav Holst's birthplace at one end and the famous Pump Room at the other. The composer remembers childhood walks there and varying degrees of catching newts and the like in the central lake. 4. Cleeve Hill is the highest point in the Cotswold chain, just reaching a thousand feet above sea level at one point, making it, officially, a mountain, albeit a gentle one. Nevertheless, the extremes of weather through the seasons are reflected here, with an ominous note or two suggesting Belas Knap, an ancient burial ground sited nearby. 5. The final movement takes the traditional Gloucestershire wassail song, heard at Christmas, and manipulates it through any number of filters and distortions. (Note: Some harp parts are doubled, some are more essential. If no harp, the part can be played either by electronic keyboard or piano.)

Canadian Folk Trilogy offers a refreshing setting of three popular Canadian Folk songs. Kicking things off is an enjoyable adaptation of Donkey Riding. Singing this tune helped sailors to pass the time as they used the donkey engine to load timber onto the decks of ships in Canadian ports. Inuit Lullaby slows the pace with a simple but beautiful melody set in three bar phrases. Finally, we conclude with a rollicking version of I's the B'y (I'm the Boy), a traditional Newfoundland folk song.Duration: 3.15

Dillon's Flight was inspired by the legend of the Phoenix, a bird of fire that does not lay eggs, has no younglings, was here at the beginning of time, and yet still lives today in a hidden desert land. Every 500 years, the sun burns down on the Phoenix until a flash of light appears and it becomes consumed by the flames of fire. From the pile of silvery-grey ash rises up a young Phoenix. The young Phoenix then takes flight and sings its glorious song to the sun for another five hundred years. Dedicated to the Dillon School in Phoenix, New York, this musical depiction is jam-packed with energy.Duration: 5.00

Evensong is a beautiful ballad in standard song (ABA) form with a brief coda. The lyric nature of the composition offers opportunities to develop the ensemble's expressive playing with concentration on tone, intonation, balance, and phrasing. The contrasting B section features the woodwind voices and moves through several non-traditional key areas (B, D, C major) before returning to the tonic key (E-flat major) for a varied restatement of the A section. Walking The Dog is one of Gershwin's lighter numbers. It is a clarinet showpiece that is just as much fun as the title suggests. Taken from the movie Shall We Dance, staring none other than the great Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Walking The Dog catches George Gershwin at the very height of his powers. Rather than the bustling, complex symphonic scores he was by-now accustomed to knocking out, it's a simple, elegant little stroll, as the title suggests. In fact, in the 1937 film, it accompanies a scene of dog-walking, aboard the luxury deck of an ocean liner. Since its use in the film, though, the song has taken on a life of its own and become a popular showing-off piece for clarinettists everywhere. Interestingly, it's also the only section of score from the whole of Shall We Dance that remains - the rest of the movie's music remains sadly unpublished.Duration: 3.00
