The Proclamation of Christmas - Score only - Stephen Bulla
Program NotesOriginally written as the 'show opener' for one of The Salvation Army's spectacular annual Christmas Carol concerts in London, and premiered by The International Staff Band, Stephen Bulla's overture The Proclamation of Christmas is an extended work that features a number of popular Christmas tunes, including Hark The Herald Angels Sing, Ding Dong Merrily on High, and The First Nowell. There are also two slightly less well-known tunes that are linked to the carols - While Shepherds Watched and Angels from the Realms of Glory - and the piece concludes with a final flourish from O Come, All Ye Faithful.Its dramatic opening and imaginative structure make it a rewarding piece to rehearse and perform, and it certainly fulfills all the requirements of a Christmas show opener! So, we firmly believe that this overture will be a popular addition to Christmas repertoire for concert band in the same way as it was in its original version for brass band.

The Ringing Isle - Jonathan Dove
Handel called Britain 'the ringing isle' because when he moved to London, he heard bells ringing everywhere: great bells in church towers, and handbells in some of the first private houses he visited. The sound of people 'ringing the changes' is a peculiarly British sound of celebration, and it seems a good starting point for a piece celebrating British musical life. Within The Ringing Isle, Dove incorporates some traditional change-ringing patterns, from 'Grandsire Doubles', 'Oxford Treble Bob Minor' and his own version of 'Plain Bob Major'. Handel's phrase also conjures up an image of a magical island, and so this is how Dove envisaged how it must have been to approach Britain from an ocean voyage.

This work tells the story of a group of children in medieval Provence, dressed up as shepherds and milkmaids, carrying torches and candles as they proceed to the stable. As they draw closer and their excitement increases, they are constantly reminded by their parents to keep the noise down so that they don't wake up the baby Jesus. The music begins quietly and builds to a majestic conclusion. Ever Forward, Ever Onwardis a wonderful piece written in concert B-flat and only uses notes within the scale. The clarinets do not go over the break. If students have been playing for at least a semester, this piece will be just challenging enough to make them want to work, but not so hard that they give up.The lines are interesting, too, no matter what instrument you can play. Layering two songs which speak to the idea of searching for something beyond your current situation, this is an excellent piece for teaching an ensemble to blend so they can hear each other and not be individually heard. Using 900 Miles and The Wayfaring Stranger for compositional material, thematic elements from both are interwoven into the overall musical fabric. 900 Miles' lonely railroad worker is heard in woodwind train whistle effects and the homesickness of The Wayfaring Stranger, as heard in the movie "1917", is effectively portrayed by a moving treatment using long tones with a continuing rhythmic accompaniment. A strong concert, contest or festival choice, this work offers cross-curricular opportunities as well.

Prepare for the fright of a lifetime as MonsterThrash takes you to the murky depths of the ocean where all sorts of unsavoury creatures lurk, waiting to devour you! From Ancient Greek mythology, Hydra a Serpentine creature with many heads guards the underworld. You can try and chop its head off but two will grow back! Be sure to escape this first monster quickly as its poisonous breath and blood will kill you instantly! If you've made it this far... be prepared to face your final threat, The Leviathan! Often described as an Dragon dwelling in the watery abyss. Enormous in size, the Leviathan is said to represent the forces of chaos. When the Leviathan is hungry he sends forth from his mouth a heat so great it makes the water of the deep boil. Only the bravest of sailors can withstand these wicked beasts, if your not up to the MonsterThrash, be prepared to spend the rest of your days in the depths of Davy Jones' Locker!

Sonata for Clarinet No.2 in Eb - Score and Parts - Johannes Brahms
This clarinet sonata was composed in 1894 for clarinetist Richard Mu?hlfeld. This was an interesting time in Brahms' life as he vowed he would retire from composing in 1890 but after he heard a performance of the Weber clarinet concerto No.1 and the Mozart clarinet quintet he so admired the soloist that he felt he should come out of retirement and compose 2 clarinet sonatas for him. These were completed in 1894 and first performed in a private concert in September of that year. These 2 sonatas were the last chamber pieces he composed before his death.
