The Message on the Rock - Robert Sheldon

The musical inspiration for this piece came from the scenes and speeches on a rock emblazoned with battle scenes from our nation's history. The piece opens with a military-sounding march that leads to a solemn section over which a narrator reads the speeches seen on the rock while a muted trumpet plays "Taps" in the background. The initial march then returns, with fragments of numerous patriotic melodies juxtaposed with the original melody, coming to an exciting ending. (4:45) This title is available in SmartMusic.

    America - Samuel F. Smith

A stately fanfare in the upper brass and woodwinds serves as an introduction to this fresh and easy treatment of America. After the main theme appears, a transition sets up a key change from B-flat to E-flat and builds to a climax punctuated by a trumpet and snare drum tag. An excellent patriotic salute!

This energetic, imaginative work presents the popular patriotic melody of America in an assortment of musical variations. To my Country - Bernard Zweers

The Hymn To My Country is the trio part of the second movement, entitled 'In the Country', from the third Symphony To My Country (1886 - 1890) by the Dutch composer Bernard Zweers (1854 - 1924). This symphony was written at a time when a lot of composers were largely inspired by patriotic feelings. The compositions of Zweers have apparently been influenced by his contemporaries such as Antonin Dvor k, Jean Sibelius (Finlandia), Bedrich Smetana (who also wrote a work entitled 'My Country' (Ma Vlast) - a cycle of symphonic poems including the famous Moldau) and Edvard Grieg. Although his father, a music dealer and amateur musician, at first described his son's musical activities as'a waste of paper and time', Zweers did not abandon his vocation. When the 27-year-old Bernard Zweers conducted his first symphony in 1881, his father was so impressed that he allowed his son to devote himself completely to music. Thre arrangement of this chorale was written on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands on May 5th, 1995, and is dedicated 'To My Country'.

    American Emblem - Bill Calhoun

This new piece from composer Bill Calhoun is a distinctly American work for concert band that has potential as a concert or contest piece or as patriotic tribute to our great land. Starting with an open sounding fanfare, the piece leads to a truly American style melodic figure before developing variations on Yankee Doodle in ways reminiscent of other great American composers. This is followed by a heartfelt middle section, leading to a stunning climax with the opening material returning for an upbeat conclusion. This will make you band sound wonderful for concert or contest.

    Commonwealth - Robert Sheldon

Located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Fairfax County has quite an interesting story to tell, from the times of the Revolutionary War to the Civil War, to its prominent position as one of the premiere suburbs of our nation's capital, and most populous jurisdiction in Virginia. A juxtaposition of those themes brings the piece to a close.

Songs from the Lowlands - Johan de Meij

Songs from the Lowlands is a collection of songs from the 16th and 17th centuries from my native country The Netherlands, formerly known as The Low Countries. They are, by turns, patriotic songs by Adriaen Valerius from the time when our country was occupied by Spain, naughty love songs and a drinking song, Peeckel-Haringh. Songs from the Lowlands was written for the farewell concert of my dear friend Jim Yarnell, who has been the director of bands at The American School of The Hague for four decades. Jim conducted the premire at his final concert, April 8, 2022, and now enjoys a well-deserved retirement. Songs from the Lowlands can be performed instrumental or with choir (SATB).
