A Little Night and Day Music - Samuel Adler

Commissioned by Carl Fischer for a school band series in the 1970s, A Little Night and Day Music is a classic of the modern band repertoire. The "Night Music" section is a study in color and atmosphere and makes striking use of contemporary instrumental techniques including clusters and aleatory. The second section ("Day Music") is a bright and brassy contrast, full offerive and an exhilarating momentum. (Only the first section of A Little Night and Day Music is included on the recording)

A section of repose follows with interjections of the rhythmic themes ending in an energetic build to the piece's conclusion.

A Tribute to Bach - Axel Norman

Johann Sebastian Bach could not have wished for a better accolade. A Tribute to Bach is a daring arrangement of Bach's Partita no.2 for pianoforte and a homage to the grandmaster of Baroque in a modern orchestration. Arranger Axel Norman has achieved this by adding percussion tastefully to the original. The woodwind section of the band, however, plays the leading parts.

A Cog In The Machine - Amy Webb

The phrase "a cog in the machine," means a small job in a big organization. In other words, a cog represents a person who may feel that they do not contribute much. Nothing could be further from the truth. So, here we have a play on human nature and a play on words. The first trumpet's highest note is D, and only the first clarinets cross the break.

Reflections - Suite on a Norwegian Folk Tune - John Brakstad

The suite is constructed around a Norwegian folk tune. The melody is called "Dark Forebodings", and the words of the song revolve around thoughts and reflections on a future that can take unexpected, insecure, or perhaps dramatic and tragic turns. This is essentially a sad song with a beautiful melody. The folk tune itself is presented in the 2nd movement. In the 1st movement, the folk tune is joined with fleeting themes that indicate the unexpected; as if the music sometimesis confused as to which way to go. There are constant changes in atmosphere and feeling, from the harsh and dissonant, to the harmonious and melodic. The 3rd movement presents a more lively variant of thefolk tune, showing optimism andhappiness, even though the "halting" character of the rhythm underscores the unpredictable. The title "Reflections", therefore, refers to thoughts we can have about life. To the Conductor:The 2nd movement has an alternativeending which is may be used if the movement is played as an independent lyrical piece in a concert. It is advisable to begin first rehersal with the 2nd movement so that the main theme is known, before beginning on the 1st movement with itsmore semi-tonal parts. Intervals and intonation can provide much of the challenge in this movement. The 3rd movement can be more technically challenging, but there is considerable leeway in the tempo marking! It is important to maintain theenergy and intensity of the music through the whole movement.

Pulsar - The Metamorphosis of a Star - John Brakstad

4th July in 1054 AD one of the most spectacular events was witnessed in the Cosmos. A massive star blew out; a supernova explosion. From the Earth it appeared as a new, bright star; the most brilliant in the sky. It was visible for three weeks, also in daylight, before it then faded away. But what was left of it is spectacular. Today we call it the "Crab Nebula".And in the very centre of the Nebula lies the remnant of the star; the core crushed by the force of gravity. This is a rotating neutron star, a pulsar, just 20 kilometres across, but so dense that it weighs more than our sun.As the neutron star spins, ejected particles stream out from its poles at almost the speed of light. These jets create powerful beams that sweep around as the star rotates. When the beams sweep across the Earth, they can be heard as regular pulses. We call them pulsars. In this piece there are three percussion parts. In addition there is an "optional part" to replace the marimba and vibraphone written in the three original percussion parts if desired. This fourth part is shown in the full score.

Jubilo A Concert Overture - Claude T. Smith

Here is an exciting composition full of the multi-rhythms combined with the Smith harmonies that make his works unique. Following a jubilant introduction, the saxophones set the melodic line, which is augmented by the full band. Brass pyramids lead into a slow lyrical section with French Horn backgrounds. A modulation follows leading into a recap of the opening theme. The driving percussion pattern is soon augmented by more instruments building to a dramatic finale.
