Walzerzauber
The genre operetta (literally meaning 'small opera') originated halfway through the 19th century, as an antidote to the ever-lengthening opra comique, which by that time contained more and more tragic intrigues as well. In this charming work, three waltz melodies from different operettas come together. First, we hear 'Lippen schweigen' from Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow) by Franz Lhar (1870-1948). Then follows 'Ja, das alles auf Ehr' from Der Zigeunerbaron (The Gypsy Baron) by Johann Strauss the younger (1825-1899), after which 'Tanzen mchte ich' from Die Czardasfrstin by Emmerich Klmn (1882-1953) closes the medley in a cheerful way. Franz Watz has skilfullyconnected the waltzes to become a magical whole.

This piece is a light-hearted waltz in the Viennese style, and waswritten in the 1970s by the composer's father as a gift to his wife. Madurodam is a small scale miniature town at Scheveningen (near The Hague) and is since many years one of the most important tourist attractions of the conurbation of Western Holland (called "Randstad"). On a scale 1:25 a charming picture of The Netherlands is given in bird's eye view: several important buildings, churches and townscapes are reconstructed up to the smallest details. There is also a fine transport system: a network of railroads, harbours and motorways covers the park and Madurodam Airport enables air traffic with all continents. The miniature suite Madurodam consists of eight short parts presenting a musical impression of the smallest town in The Netherlands. IReveille the piccolo flute and the side drum announce a new day; II Toy Soldiers there is a military parade in front of the George Maduro Barracks; III Binnenhof/Buitenhof a solemn melody is the main theme of the suite and depicts the state buildings and the nearby lake "Hofvijver" at The Hague; IV Small Windmills everything that moves or whirls at Madurodam is described in this barrel organ waltz; V Intermezzo/Nocturne Madurodam by night is described by a solemn passage played in unison by the lower instruments; VI The Westerkerk Church also the capital Amsterdam is represented with the chimes of the famous Westerkerk church; VII The Muiderslot Castle an elegant pavane recalls medieval atmospheres; VIII "Grande" Finale the windmill theme comes back and then the suite comes to an end with the "Binnenhof" theme, decorated by the first strains of the national hymn "Wilhelmus".

Diamond Concerto was commissioned by Musikverein Mrschied from Germany - Dr. Eric Grandjean, conductor - for a special concert featuring Steven Mead as guest soloist. Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein.The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist, which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and, now, a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead's special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career.The village ofMrschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones, which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this it was decided to give the commission a local connection by choosing the title, Diamond Concerto. Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:1 EARTH STARis rather stern in mood, opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.2 OCEAN DREAMuses a varied quote from the composer's Music for Battle Creek, including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.3 BLUE HEARTwas written, at Steven Mead's suggestion, in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz. The quasi-improvisatory central section features a call-and-response passage for the soloist and upper woodwinds.Soloist: Difficulty 6Diamond Concerto is available for euphonium and piano (AMP 374-401) as well as for euphonium and brass band (AMP 354-030).

Three Holiday Scenes - Timothy Johnson

The first scene opens with fragments of "Oh Tannenbaum" but quickly moves into a beautiful Christmas waltz. An "effets de neige," or "Snowfall effect," carries the luscious second and contrasting scene. In the 3rd and final scene, the phrases from well-known carols mergewith one another, creating the effect of "caroling." Finally, melodies serve as counterpoint for one another and bring this delightful vignette to a close. This piece presents an excellent opportunity to work with the Art department in creating drawings and paintings of holiday images. Pull your chair a little closer to the fireplace and sit back for a winsome holiday treat!

Marinarella - Julius Fucik
Julius Fucik (1872-1916) was born in Prague, Czech Republic. He studied under Antonin Dvork and at a young age played in military bands and later became bandmaster, a profession he practiced in various cities with many bands. In 1913 he settled in Berlin where he started his own music publishing house. As a composer Fucik is known for his light entertaining music however he also wrote chamber music, songs, choral works, a mass, a requiem and an unfinished opera. Many of his works have fallen into oblivion but many of his marches such as Einzug der Gladiatoren, Regimentskinder and Florentiner Marsch are still often played. With the concert overture Marinarella, Fucik takes us toan imaginary seaside resort on a beautiful spring day. Marinarella, a girl of the sea, accompanies us on our stroll. Leisurely walking couples on the boulevard, the murmur of the sea, fragments of a waltz melody from a caf and a concert band performing a promenade concert pass you by. A fantastic opening work for any concert.

Bella Italia is a medley of three Neapolitan songs that were made famous and popular by the tenor Mario Lanza. The work opens with the graceful waltz Santa Lucia, which is followed by a Latin-style version of O Sole Mio, a melody that became even more well known when used by Elvis Presley as the basis of the song It's Now or Never. The cheerful Funicul, Funicul ends the medley in 6/8 time. This arrangement for concert band by Roland Kernen will appeal to a broad audience and will leave both the band and the audience in a high-spirited mood.
