The title Luna is the Latin word for moon, which is the subject of this lyrical work by composer Yukiko Nishimura, originally composed for string orchestra. In a lilting waltz style, the composer has described the inspiration as imagining the sky with the moon at daytime. Nishimura's gift for melody shines throughout, especially in the middle section which includes lush passages in the upper winds with a delicate accompaniment. This new arrangement by the composer makes this beautiful work accessible to symphonic bands.

The first scene opens with fragments of "Oh Tannenbaum" but quickly moves into a beautiful Christmas waltz. An "effets de neige," or "Snowfall effect," carries the luscious second and contrasting scene. In the 3rd and final scene, the phrases from well-known carols mergewith one another, creating the effect of "caroling." Finally, melodies serve as counterpoint for one another and bring this delightful vignette to a close. This piece presents an excellent opportunity to work with the Art department in creating drawings and paintings of holiday images.
