Russian Folk Song Suite - Anatoly Lyadov
Russian Folk Song Suite is a collection of three contrasting movements taken from the orchestral work Eight Russian Folksongs, Op. 58 by Anatoly Lyadov. Originally written in 1905, these short pieces, transcribed here for concert band by Bill Calhoun, stay true to the original in both character and performance techniques. A colorful addition to the repertoire for the concert band.

Cyprian Suite" is a spirited journey through varied musical moods, with each of four movements based on a different Cypriot folk song. The opening Servikos" a playful and rhythmic dance in Serbian style. A tender lullaby, Aya Marina", is followed by the good-natured Exomolghisis", a setting of a humorous song about a confession. The concluding Agapis Tin", a song of unrequited love, begins pensively and builds to a dramatic conclusion.

The "Suite for Wind Orchestra" has three parts. The introductory "Symphonic Movement" is based on two opposite musical ideas. The first is chromatic, whereas the second is rather diatonically harmonized. The "Nocturne" or second part is contrasting with the preceding part and is written in the minor key. The quiet atmosphere at the end of the "Nocturne" is abruptly interrupted by the "Toccata". This part, a "Vivace", leading into a "Presto" at the end, has a wild, passionate character.

Batltle Suite - Barry E. Kopetz
Battle Suite is a very programmatic work that musically portrays a battle at a mythical medieval castle. The story begins before the battle itself as the first section depicts the watchtower guards as they keep watch, looking for any indication of danger. The next section, Ursa Major, refers to the evening preceding the attack when the stars are shining and Ursa Major, the constellation that includes the big dipper, shines above in the night skies. The suspense then builds in the third section as we hear the ominous sounds of the approaching enemy.
