Darius Milhaud's West Point Suite for Concert Band. Score and parts.Darius Milhaud was commissioned to compose a work especially for the West Point Sesquicentennial celebration,marking150 years of progress at the United States Military Academy. Accepting the invitation, Milhaud visited West Point in the fall of 1951 to acquire the neccessary information and atmosphere for such a work. HisWestPoint Suite was first performed by the United States Military Academy Band, conducted by Major Francis E. Resta, Commanding Officer and Director of Music, in Carnegie Hall, New York, on January, 5, 1952.

Suite from Hymn of the Highlands draws three expressive musical pictures of the Scottish highlands. The first movement, Ardross Castle, features solo passages for clarinet and bassoon and features a fascinating bagpipe melody. The second movement, Alladale, is a saxophone trio with an accompaniment featuring the percussion section. The final movement, Dundonnell, features two highly contrasting melodies, a wild presto and the bagpipe melody first heard in the first movement.

VIEW SCORE PDF This magnificent festive suite was written by Kevin Norbury for the Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School Wind Symphony and features three well known carols set in a Renaissance style. Three contrasting movements comprise the work: i. Processional (Personent hodie - On this day earth shall ring) This is a short piece imagining a torchlight Yuletide procession (perhaps bearing the traditional roasted wild boar), using a well-known Christmas melody from the large collection of music compiled in the 16th century called Piae Cantiones (1582). The tune is presented twice with accompanying, related melodic material. ii. Pastorale (Quem pastores laudavere - Shepherds sang their praises o'er him) This is a 14th-century melody which was originally collected by Michael Praetorius at the end of the 16th-century. The treatment throughout is very lyrical without overly complex harmonies. The melody is heard three times with brief linking episodes and a short coda. iii. Celebration! (In dulci jubilo - In sweet celebration - Ding-dong merrily on high) This magnificent 13th-century melody was also a part of Michael Praetorius's collection. It is traditionally associated with the words 'Good Christian men, rejoice!' The opening is a straight transcription of the great chorale prelude for organ by J.S. Bach. After the grandeur of the opening, the tune is heard in more of a 'folky' style. A lot of related melodic material is then presented before the tune Ding-dong merrily on high is heard. After another episode of previously used music In dulci jubilo reappears in a joyful conclusion to the piece. A Moorside Suite was written in 1928 as a test piece for the National Brass Band Festival championship competition held that year. The three-movement work includes a jaunty "Scherzo," a lovely "Nocturne," and the popular "March," which has enjoyed countless performances since its premiere. Douglas E. Wagner created this arrangement with younger players in mind. Though slightly abridged, the main themes and styles are present in a carefully-crafted performance piece accessible to concert bands at this level. This authentic arrangement still bears Holst's unmistakable musical signature.Duration: 3.30

Of all of Gordon Jacob's major contributions to the British wind band repertoire, the William Byrd Suite (written in 1923) stands as his most-often programmed work. Though originally based on six movements from William Byrd's Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, this setting for developing band incorporates two contrasting movements including "The Earle of Oxford's Marche" and "Wolsey's Wilde." Like Jacob's wind band work, the music is not a mere transcription from the original keyboard collection, but rather stylized with his own inventive musical spirit for modern concert band.
