Premiered by the University of Kansas Symphonic Band with Robert E. Foster conducting, this work was presented the 1982 Neil A. Kjos Memorial Award for the most significant contribution to wind band music. It consists of three movements: an "Elegia" in sonata form, "Variazioni Interrotte" (Interrupted Variations), and a "Finale" in classic sonata form concluding in a coda which ends the symphony in a final, dramatic, colorful outburst, the sort of pure musical energy that only a modern symphonic band can produce. Commissioned by the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and first performed by them on 6th August 1992.1. Overture: VivaceA bustling opening movement in sonata form. After an introduction in which a syncopated theme is tossed around the band, the first subject proper gives way to a more legato second theme. A scherzando bridge passage leads to the recapitulation.2. Serenade: Lento ExpressivoA short introduction leads to a sonorous theme from the middle of the band. A slightly more rhythmic central 5/8 section leads to a short cadenza-like duet for two alto saxes which reintroduces the opening of the movement.3. Finale: Molto VivaceA fast and furious finale which fails to settle long enough for a real theme to develop as motivic ideas are thrown from player to player. Eventually a violently syncopated tune emerges from the middle of the band but this is interrupted by a reflective interlude. Tetraktys, named after a mathematical concept of Pythagoras, is a festive and varied work, composed for the tenth anniversary of the Ghent University Wind Band. A mysterious introduction paves the way for a driving allegro, in which all sections of the orchestra are featured. The slow middle part offers a moment of repose, introduced by a lyrical theme presented by the clarinet section. After a brief recollection of the fast movement, the mood shifts into a swinging big band-style passage, that leads directly into the finale.Duration: 10.30

Happy Harmony is a cheerful composition that puts wind music in the spotlight. The word 'harmony' can be interpreted in different ways. In countries like France, Belgium and the Netherlands, 'harmony' is the name given to a symphonic wind band. Secondly, the term generally refers to a feeling of unity, which is very much present amongst band musicians, owing to the communal connection that is created when playing together. Thirdly, there is of course the harmony that you find in music itself.This 'harmonious' work opens with a festive introduction leading to a catchy pop theme. A brilliant and dynamic introduction, ending with a grand maestoso, is followed by a gentle, restful section with glimpses of solo instruments. Grace Williams (1906 - 1977) from Barry, South Wales, was Wales finest composer. She studied composition at the Royal College of Music with Ralph Vaughan Williams and completed the Fantasia on Welsh Nursery Tunes in 1940. The iconic Fantasia, - her most popular work, which brought her to prominence - is a composition for symphonic orchestra based on traditional Welsh nursery tunes and lullabies.It is a light-hearted musical journey through childhood in eight traditional tunes. The jubilant start to the work is echoed in the finale, with a calmer, but effectively scored middle section.The Fantasia was featured in the 2024 Last Night of the Proms.
