Commissioned by the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association, this major work by James Curnow honors the memory and legacy of renowned conductor and educator Harry Begian. In consideration of Dr. Begian's Armenian heritage,Nulli Secundus (second to none) is a suite of three variations based on the Armenian folk song Cilicia (My Homeland). Movements include: I. March Caprice (concert march in fantasy variation form), II. In Memoriam (honoring victimsof the 1915-18 Armenian Genocide), and III. Finale (rapid paced set of variations). Istvn Bogr's series of movements intended for youngsters is colourfully instrumented, evocative music, rich in melodic invention; in character it is most closely akin to Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker ballet music. In the opening movement (Little march), little boys wearing paper shakos on their heads and carrying wooden swords play at soldiers. The following movement, Humming, is the only movement in the suite that is calm and in odd-numbered rhythm; in it the children gather flowers in their little baskets, and meanwhile hum pleasant tunes. The third movement is a funny game, with its tempo sometimes speeding up, sometimes slowing down, but by the end really going wild.The title of the finale is Game of tag. The tiny formal sections and interludes in this lively, cheerful music are linked together by a recurring rondo theme, and the chase ends with a brief coda.

Virtuosi consists of a single movement divided into two continuous sections, each characterised by a particular mood. The opening section creates a serene and mysterious atmosphere with the clarinets introducing a warm, smooth melody which naturally flows towards a passage containing much ornamentation. A calmato brings the first section to a close, giving the soloist the opportunity to reveal the warm tones of the low chalumeau register. The second section begins with a sequence of rhythmic, dynamic sound effects which lead into a virtuoso passage from the soloist. The lively passage then softens to let a short theme introduce the majestic and brilliant finale.

Sound Variations is a work comprising of eight short sections, each based on a simple theme, each characterised by a great variety of styles and sounds. It opens with a fanfare-like introduction that soon leads into the presentation of the main theme followed by five variations on this theme. Each of these variations has its own style: Swing, Latin, Waltz, March and Rock. After a final repeat of the main theme, the work comes to an end with a brilliant finale.

In combining his gifts as a composer with his great creative spark, Andr Waignein composed Remember Mozart, a delicate and flowing work dedicated to one of the greatest composers in music history, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Remember Mozart develops a single but serene melodic line, only interrupted by some measures in the central passage. The primary theme soon returns, proceeding with a natural flow, and leads the work to a modulatory section - a bridge passage to the Mozartian-flavored finale, brilliantly highlighted by a composer filled with admiration for the genius of Salzburg.

Euphoria - Wim Laseroms
Euphoria is a bracing composition which concentrates its energy on the baritones/euphoniums. The solo parts require at least two soloists. This piece opens with a syncopated introduction followed by a statement of the simple melodic theme interpreted by the baritones/euphoniums. The style of performance is particularly affected by the alternation of staccato and legato passages. The finale of this work develops through a progression of accelerandos and crescendos leading to an amazing conclusion.

The Spiked Wheel - Tom De Haes
The legends surrounding Saint Catherine of Alexandria, also known as the Great Martyr Saint Catherine, were the source of inspiration for this work. It depicts events surrounding her life in five musical episodes. The first episode presents the Emperor's procession and theme. All is well until a heathen sacrificial ritual is heard in the second movement. After the sacrifice, Catherine and her lyrical, reflective theme make an appearance. A dispute breaks out between Catherine and the Emperor, which can be heard in the heated exchange between their respective themes. Catherine is sentenced to die by the breaking wheel. The voices of angels can be heard in the finale, asCatherine ascends to heaven.
