Malcolm Arnold's Clarinet Concerto No. 2, Op. 115, was dedicated to Benny Goodman, and first performed by him as part of the Red Rocks Music Festival with the Denver Symphony Orchestra conducted by Brian Priestman on 17 August 1974. The third movement, known affectionately as 'The Pre-Goodman Rag', is an outrageous ragtime parody with a hauntingly wistful middle section. Divertissement was originally commissioned by clarinetist Verity Butler in 1994 and first performed by her that year in Cheltenham Town Hall. The orchestra version, for harp and strings, was made in 2000. It is a delightful showcase for a clarinet soloist with thematic material quoted throughout in a variety of musical expressions. The harp (or electronic keyboard) has an important role in this piece.
