Imagine if you could see the North Pole, where Santa keeps all of his reindeer. Someone, whether Santa himself or the elves in his employ, has to keep them fed, warm, and happy if they are to do the impossible again in a year's time. Old St. Nicholas Had a Farm has some fun with this idea by mashing up the classic song "Old MacDonald" with popular Christmas carols. Using only the first six notes of the Bb scale and only two repeated eighth notes as the most challenging rhythm, students will feel comfortable playing the sound of sleigh bells, the crack of Santa's whip, and the thunder of reindeer hoofs. This piece will make a perfect addition to your next holiday concert and audiences will delight in participating.

Starting from a lovely and haunting melody introduced by the clarinets, Carl Strommen's Invocation and Dance, in two contrasting sections, is an object lesson in how to write memorably for young musicians using simple, straightforward and appealing material. According to Viking mythology, following a battle the bravest souls of the slain would be divided between two Gods, Odin and Freyja. Freyja was the Goddess of Love and War and before going into battle many Viking warriors would pray that they would die bravely so that Freyja would take their soul to join her personal army made up of the souls of the bravest of men.'Freyja's Call' describes one of these, a young Scottish soldier, going into battle as part of the Viking army who occupied parts of Scotland for four centuries. First, a slow theme is heard, Freyja's theme, which is the soldier praying to Freyja to keep a watch on him. Then the drums introduce a new rhythm which announces the beginning of the battle.A Celtic Jig is used to describe the progress of the battle with the jig played quietly at first then gradually louder with more percussion being added until a full ff section signifies the soldier fighting the enemy directly.Suddenly, the music drops back to the quiet Jig theme. The soldier has been slain, but will he be chosen by Frejya? After a short time, Freyja's theme is heard as the brave soldier is taken to Freyja's heavenly army of brave warriors, and the piece then ends in triumph.

Der Aufstand - Gavin Higgins
Der Aufstand (German for 'riot') is not a descriptive work, nor is it solely based on the riots of 2011. It does, however, draw on the idea of opposing forces and escalating anger. The work falls into two contrasting sections that are linked by a series of repeated, 'screaming' chords. A slow build drives the first section from a single pitch to a blazing orchestral tutti. The second section is a fast and wild series of fanfares and driving rhythms that ultimately cannot be sustained. In many ways this mirrors the first. Both sections open on single tones (Bb and E) and grow to a climax of brass and hammered chords. The first performance took place on the last day of the 2012 Olympic Games. Der Aufstand is a noisy antithesis to the celebratory fanfare.Wind Band Grade: 6 (Professional and elite student and 'national' bands)Duration: 10 minutes

Vranjanka - Kenneth Hesketh
Vranjanka (pronounced VRAHN-yahn-kah) means "From Vranje," a town in southern Serbia. It is loosely based on the traditional folksong ano Duo. The melody is extant in two versions, one in 7/8 and one in 3/4. The musical form of the piece starts with a fairly slow introductory section, a faster second section cast in a set of variations on the folksong. Vranjanka was commissioned by Timothy and Hilary Reynish in memory of their son William.

Panic Button (CB) - Paul Saggers
Panic Button was commissioned by Bert Van Thienen especially for 2022 World Music Contest in Kerkrade (NL). The composer was given complete freedom musically, however, he was given two conditions. First, it had to be an atypical work, a composition that puts the orchestra in a different perspective than the traditional repertoire and be suitable for both concert and competition stages. Second, it had to give the musicians the opportunity to go completely wild for a while. On the one hand, to shake off any stress and, on the other, to give them energy for the rest of the program. A musical journey around the world in four mouvements. In the 1st mouvement, 'Europe Express', we go on a fascinating trip through Europe. Attentive listeners might hear some influences by London, Paris or Madrid. In part two we move on to the east, 'Across Asia'. The trip takes us first into Arabia, where the flutes are smuggling us via the Silk Road into China. The saxophones take care of a typically Jewish klezmer sound. In part three - Yes We Can (The American Dream) -we fly to the swinging United States. Before returning home, we quickly go 'Down Under'.

Impetus represents both the character of this work and the state of mind of the Ensemble Musical de Maill, which commissioned it. The Ensemble's two conductors, Victorien Garreau and Grgoire Tapin, asked composer Thierry Deleruyelle to write an original work to mark the 115th anniversary of their orchestra. A brilliant and dynamic introduction, ending with a grand maestoso, is followed by a gentle, restful section with glimpses of solo instruments. The work concludes with a grand finale, taking up the theme from the beginning.Duration: 11.30
