"100 Years of the Republic of Austria" should be an occasion to reflect on the value of freedom and democracy, precious treasures that don't grow on trees but which have to be fought for again and again. The imperial anthem composed by Franz Josef Haydn, which to this day, survives as the German national anthem, has played a very special role in the story of Austria. It seems that Haydn was inspired by a Croatian folksong. It was sung in Burgenland Croatian areas in various versions under the title "Atal se jesem" ("I am standing"). ...Then Thy Words Will Take Wing... is a four movement composition based upon drawings made by Russian painter Zinovii Tolkatchev (1903-1970), who served as official artist during the liberation of concentration camps in Auschwitz. After the war, Tolkatchev's works were published and now tour the world as a travelling exhibition. This composition is a tribute to the victims of the Holocaust who still remain nameless, and is a powerful piece to include in any concert programme.

Norfolk is one of the most beautiful counties in England, famous for its charming villages and boundless broads, a popular centre for sailing holidays. It is also the home of one of the best known of all British composers, Sir Malcolm Arnold. The date of the premiere of this piece was to fall close to his 80th birthday, so Philip Sparke decided to write something of a birthday tribute. Some of Arnold's best-loved orchestral works are his sets of dances: there are two sets of English Dances, Four Scottish Dances, Four Cornish Dances etc., most of which have been arranged for concert band at one time or another. Philip Sparke thought it would be appropriate for the concert band tohave its own set of dances and wrote Four Norfolk Dances very much in the style of Arnold's suites.

This suite was written in the style of traditional Russian folk music, but does not use existing melodies or themes as its basis. The colourful and varied work contains a number of surprising turns, but also familiar sounds. After the introduction, a kind of Trepak follows ? a fairly quick dance with attractive themes. The second movement (Garovot) is predominantly slow and conveys some melancholy, although, during a more dynamic passage the passion flares up again. Finally, the Troika takes us along in a reindeer sleigh through a grand snowy landscape. This is a wonderful tribute to the music of Eastern Europe in the style of some of the great Russian masters.
