The scenery is breathtaking and includes the famed cherry blossoms (sakura). Townscape was composed for the centenary of the St. Cecilia concertband from Oudenburg, a town which also inspired the composer throughout this work. The first part depicts a train slowly approaching from afar and then vanishing into the distance again. This is rendered by a sort of repetitive pulse in the music. This is followed by some serious action with jet skis on the Sinnesael lake. Their spectacular twists and turns are transformed into an exuberant theme and a middle section with several changes of time signature. After that comes a restful, lyrical Nocturne, a musical painting of the mill at night. The work concludes with a lively finale that is an ode to dailylife in Oudenburg, a place where people take initiative and there is plenty to see and do.

Layering two songs which speak to the idea of searching for something beyond your current situation, this is an excellent piece for teaching an ensemble to blend so they can hear each other and not be individually heard. Using 900 Miles and The Wayfaring Stranger for compositional material, thematic elements from both are interwoven into the overall musical fabric. 900 Miles' lonely railroad worker is heard in woodwind train whistle effects and the homesickness of The Wayfaring Stranger, as heard in the movie "1917", is effectively portrayed by a moving treatment using long tones with a continuing rhythmic accompaniment. A strong concert, contest or festival choice, this work offers cross-curricular opportunities as well.

All the hustle and bustle you'd expect are vividly showcased by the percussion section. This fun adaption of "Jolly Old St. Nicholas" is given a special twist by using numerous sound effects (anvil, woodblock, duck call, vibra-slap, train whistle, triangle, ratchet, siren/whistle, and bells) to represent the assembling of toys in Santa's toy shop. A really fun selection for that holiday concert, featuring the percussion section with a lot of different sounds from Santa's toys. Good performances demonstrate good dynamic contrasts.
