This composition was commissioned by the Musique Municipale d'Ingwiller, for the occasion of their 150th anniversary. The source of inspiration for this work was the municipality of Ingwiller in the French region, Alsace. The title of the work refers to the many buildings there that are made of red sandstone, and to the 'Schlembe', a train connecting Ingwiller with Bouxwiller for sixty years. It consists of 4 movements, all related to the city of Ingwiller and its history. This bright and positive work offers beautiful melodic themes, slow passages perfect for working on intonation and phrasing, as well as pleasant parts for Percussion.

This composition reflects a colorful time in American history and is an opportunity for your band to discover ragtime rhythms. Folk hero Billy Miner (the Grey Fox) was the last of the old-time bandits. He was noted for his unusualpoliteness and is believed to be the originator of the phrase, Hands up! This composition is like a mini movie score and starts with the Billy Miner ragtime theme, followed by a train robbery, his capture, and final release. This march was commissioned by The office of cultural affairs in Fana and Ytrebygda (a part of Bergen Municipality) for the opening of The Bergen Light Rail. The premiere was given by The Norwegian Navy Band Bergen and Smrs skolemusikkduring the light rails maiden voyage. Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway opened the light rail on June 22nd 2010.My ida was to give the march a strong link to Bergen. In the bass solo (letter B) I have quoted Bergens "national"anthem Nystemtn and in the Trio (letter E) I have used a bugle call from Bergens unique tradition of archerchery brigades. The first part of the march is meant to have a sort of train feel to it; somethingthats moving steadily through thestreets of the city.

Townscape was composed for the centenary of the St. Cecilia concertband from Oudenburg, a town which also inspired the composer throughout this work. The first part depicts a train slowly approaching from afar and then vanishing into the distance again. This is rendered by a sort of repetitive pulse in the music. This is followed by some serious action with jet skis on the Sinnesael lake. Their spectacular twists and turns are transformed into an exuberant theme and a middle section with several changes of time signature. After that comes a restful, lyrical Nocturne, a musical painting of the mill at night. The work concludes with a lively finale that is an ode to dailylife in Oudenburg, a place where people take initiative and there is plenty to see and do.

Railroad Ramble - Peter Kleine Schaars
This composition was commissioned by the Concert Band of the NS (the Dutch railroad company) and is intended as an opening piece, bringing the band and the audience on track for an exciting concert! The ascending chords over theostinato bass of the introduction represent the energetic pulling away of the train. The main theme in 10/8 time makes one drift away in the rhythm of full speed. The clownish middle section reflects the seemingly disorderlyactivity in a station hall during rush hour. This is followed by a reprise of the main theme and the introduction, which brings this fascinating musical rail journey to an end.

The scenery is breathtaking and includes the famed cherry blossoms (sakura). Layering two songs which speak to the idea of searching for something beyond your current situation, this is an excellent piece for teaching an ensemble to blend so they can hear each other and not be individually heard. Using 900 Miles and The Wayfaring Stranger for compositional material, thematic elements from both are interwoven into the overall musical fabric. 900 Miles' lonely railroad worker is heard in woodwind train whistle effects and the homesickness of The Wayfaring Stranger, as heard in the movie "1917", is effectively portrayed by a moving treatment using long tones with a continuing rhythmic accompaniment. A strong concert, contest or festival choice, this work offers cross-curricular opportunities as well.
