The percussion section along with inventive hemiola rhythmic patterns in the winds propels this intense segment. The mood shifts completely for the slow Misterioso section which is characterised by layers of instrumental colours and rich brass statements. Commissioned by the Gamma Eta chapter of Phi Mu Alpha, at Furman University, Greenville, SC, this impressive work is built around two chorale themes and a recurring fanfare. After the boldly stated opening, a bright allegro developmental section becomes increasingly more intense until a dramatic cadence is reached. At this point, antiphonal brass (3 trumpets, 2 trombones) soar above the ensemble and play a grandiose version of the first chorale. The band re-enters and both ensembles play the climactic ending to the work, in a new key, and with both hymns being heard simultaneously. Marvelous work! Duration: 6:00

The Russian ballet director Sergei Diaghilev commissioned many composers to write music for the theatre. This was what caused Serge Prokofiev to compose the four part Scytische Suite (also known as Ala and Lolli) in 1916, from which The Enemy God and the Dance of the Spirits can be heard on this CD. This suite is one of Prokofiev's first works, and received negative criticism following its first performance on account of its being "uncivilised". Prokofiev himself wrote after this first performance "...The timpani player beat the skin of the timpani to tatters, and the whole orchestra voiced a protest. A cellist complained that he only put up with the violence, created by the blaring brass, on account of his sick wife and three children...".Duration: 3:00

Commissioned by and dedicated to Kennesaw Mountain High School, Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, this exciting concert overture will be a sure hit with your students. The intense opening moments immediately lead us to a brassy fanfare interlude. A secondary rhythmic dialogue between brass and woodwinds punctuates a flowing main theme. The slower middle section is a gracefully simple melody that offers a flowing contrast to the rhythmic intensity of the faster outer sections. Reminiscent of this composer's earlier composition "Fire Dance," "Kennesaw Mountain Celebration" is certain to be one of your student's favorites.
