£37.95MUSIC FOR AROSA (Prestige Concert Band - Score only) - Sparke, Philip
This work was commissioned in 1996 by the Arosa Cultural committee and first performed in Arosa in that year. The majestic introduction opens with trombones and euphonium, heralding a legato theme, chorale-like in character. A pair of flutes introduce a new theme. A trumpet introduces a series of highly syncopated solos, which feature many metre changes, and the tempo increases when playful motifs are exchanged between various sections of the band. A solo clarinet introduces an expressive tune. A brass chorale follows, with interruptions from the flute and bassoon, until the clarinet tune is played by the whole band. This reaches a climax and the mood subsides to reach a quiet horn chord. The broad legato tune returns and the excitement increases until the march theme triumphantly returns to full band. This leads to the coda which is based on the opening fanfare and closes the work emphatically. Simple, elegant and beautiful, this setting of the traditional African-American hymn is a welcome addition to the beginning band repertoire. Lyrical, flowing lines provide a welcome opportunity to teach phrasing. Full band statements combined with both woodwind and brass choir features create a unique teaching opportunity for the very beginning band. Although the original melody and this arrangement use only six notes in their construction, this setting is suitable for performance by bands at multiple levels. Highly recommended!

Zoo Ball is score in five parts with various transpositions for each voice. Parts 1 & 2 are the Soprano parts. Part 1 should 'outweigh' part 2 in sound, if not in numbers, as it is often divided. Trumpets/Cornets and Clarinets should be divided accordingly between the parts. Part 3 is the Alto part. It is occasionally scored as an individual part but frequently doubles part 2 or 4. Part 4 is the Tenor part. Part 5 is the Bass part and frequently doubles part 4, either in unison or at an octave lower.The Zoo Ball is a suite of twelve light-hearted pieces for the young wind of brass band by Keith Strachan.It can be seen from the titles that the young player is introduced to a variety of dance rhythms that are both fun to play and enjoyable to listen to.It is scored in five parts (some of which divide in places) so can be played by ensembles of aroung ten players up to full band. When a fuller instrumentation is available, teachers and conductors are encouraged to vary the scoring as appropriate, particularly in repeated sections. Holst composed A Moorside Suite for Brass Band in 1928. It is in three movements, this March being preceded by a Scherzo and Nocturne. It is an extraordinary mature work for band from a master composer. There is very little fortissimo writing and there are no semiquavers at all. Instead, Holst has written clean melodic lines with each part being woven into a texture based on the modal lines of English folk music; but these represent its stylistic origin rather than using actual folk tunes as in Holst's earlier band writing. The March is stirring and flowing and is an ideal standalone piece to open or close any concert or festival programme. Duration: 4.15

£250.00The Wind in the Willows (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Meij, Johan
A book for those who keep the spirit of youth alive in them; of life, sunshine, running water, woodlands, dusty roads, winter firesides, said author Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932) about his children's book The Wind in the Willows. Initially, he wrote the stories about Ratty, Mole, Badger and Toad to read to his visually handicapped son Alistair, but after the publication in book form in 1908, it became a worldwide success. It was later also turned into a film and a television series. What appealed ti the composer most is the friendly, very cosy atmosphere that Grahame has managed to create with his optimistic narrative style full of high spirits, an atmosphere that reminds thecomposer of his own carefree youth. It was therefore a great pleasure to set this book to music! The four movements successively describe: I) The River- The river, which flows through the habitat of the animals like a lifeline, regularly is the scene of pleasant boat trips and picnics. The animals lead their untroubled lives here. The four-tone main motif [A-C-D-C] is extensively presented by the brass section, and returns in the following movements as a countermelody. II) Ratty and Mole -The bright, energetic Rat and the melancholy doubter Mole are inseparable friends and have many adventures. Their opposite characters are illustrated by separate musical themes. III) Mister Toad - The wilful, haughty Mister Toad is indeed a unique case: time after time, he runs into tricky situations, and with his indomitable passion for fast, preferably stolen, cars he causes quite a lot of damage... IV) The Return of Ulysses - After Toad Hall, the majestic residence of Mister Toad, is recovered from the weasels and stoats of the Wild Wood, who had captured the estate in a cowardly way, our friends get ready for a banquet. They celebrate the victory with a triumphant parade, and so both the book and the music conclude with a happy ending. Duration: 17.00

La Quintessenza is a musical approach of the quintessence, the heart of the matter. By focusing a five note motif in a number of variants, De Meij tries to get through to the essence of the musical matter. The core of the composition is a lyrical middle part (Arioso), preceded by an opening fanfare for brass (Introduzione) and a burlesque variant on the same motif (Capriccio). In the fourth part (Alla Marcia) this main motif is only used as an ambient signal, and in the Finale the opening theme is repeated so the musical walk-round is complete. Duration: 12.00

£264.99Poeme Montagnard (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan
Jan Van der Roost received the commission for this work from the Orchestre d'Harmonie du Val d'Aoste and dedicated the composition to Lino Blanchod, the conductor of the orchestra. The first performance was on 26th January 1997 by the orchestra itself and under the direction of the composer. This extensive symphonic poem depicts the atmosphere and history of the autonomous French speaking region Val d'Aoste in northern Italy, and is meant as a musical homage to the historical figure Catherine de Challant. The opening of this piece describes the rugged nature of this region dominated by Mont Blanc, the roof of Europe. A brief, combative passage conjures up the numerous wars fought here through the ages, later expanding into a surprising 'Renaissance Dance' with an original and fitting recorder quartet. A broad, lyrical theme portrays the love that has always played an important role here. After recapturing several of the earlier themes, the piece closes with the renaissance dance, this time played by the brass. A spectacular finale brings this symphonic poem to a close.Duration: 18:30

Shenandoah - Score and Parts - Leonard Ballantine
Program NotesCanadian Salvation Army officer Leonard Ballantine is a gifted and talented musician with a wonderful talent for composing and arranging for both instrumental and vocal ensembles.Among the many compositions he has written is this beautiful arrangement of the American folk song Shenandoah. It was originally conceived as a brass band arrangement and published in 1998. It has also appeared as a vocal setting, but has now been faithfully transcribed for wind band by Brian Bowen and we are all sure that this will prove to be a popular addition to the repertoire.
