(2003) Award-winning composer Michael Daugherty's first published work for young band describes a stretch of Interstate 75 that crosses through Florida's Everglades National Park. Alligator Alley celebrates this noble beast that has remained largely unchanged from prehistoric times. The first theme (Alligator's Theme) features the woodwinds (predominantly bassoons) while the second theme (Hunter's Theme) is performed by the brass. Tuba Libre! was commissioned by Eirik Gjerdevik, Tubaist with the Norwegian Navy Band Bergen and also widely sought after as a soloist and conductor.The work is the first major work the composer wrote for Brass Band.Eirik Gjerdevik recorded the work on his album "Eirik the Viking", a recording which also feature Stavanger Brass Band conducted by Morten E. Hansen. The album was released by Lawo Classics in 2014 (LWC 1064).The version for Concert Band was also premiered by Eirik Gjerdevik, this time conducted by the composer.

£75.00Sonata - Derek Bourgeois
This work, composed in 1998, was commissioned by the American trombonist Don Lucas as a work for trombone and piano and first performed by him in Birmingham on 19th May 2000. Subsequently, I arranged the music for both solo trombone and brass band and solo trombone and wind band so that it now exists in three formats. The first movement, in B flat major, is brisk and energetic, and is cast in sonata form. The second subject is gentler and more lyrical. The second movement, a scherzo in C major, is the most complex of the four. Basically the structure is a rond. For a long time the music remains in the opening 5/8 time until a new theme introduces more broken rhythms in a more jazzy idiom. After a return of the opening theme the following episode is more tonally ambiguous. Finally, the main theme returns to round off the movement. The third movement, a lyrical adagio, is really one long extended melodic flow. The harmonies are lush and the textures simple and direct. The tonal center is A minor, but the music meanders through so many keys, that this key centre is heavily disguised. The finale is a fiery affair. G minor is really its home key, but throughout the movement the music moves about a lot and the second subject is first heard in A flat minor. The movement's underlying sonata structure is masked not only by its loose tonality but also by its frequently changing time signatures. Like the first movement the second subject is more lyrical in nature and for a while it seems that the music will end peacefully, but a final flurry heralds a triple forte unison on the home note of the first movement - B flat. Andr Waignein received order of this composition of the "Municipal Brass Band of Luxembourg-Bonnevoie". It is in the presence of the Grand-Duke Heir Henri that took place first interpretation on January 24, 1998 with this orchestra, and with the composer as director.This work is a musical evocation describing this magnificent Luxembourgian region and her inhabitants.The overture evokes the serenity met in this region. An orchestrale development, as rhythmic as sound, propels the orchestra in a "military" atmosphere putting in evidence all the registers of the orchestra. This tension is maintained until the general explosion of the whole. One cantilena appears in all theinnocence. Gradually, the orchestration suppresses, until the exhaustion. The passage which follows represents the tempestuous events which took place through ages. A spectacular cadence, by the clarinet or by the soprano saxophone, terminates this desorder.An ample and lyric theme reflects the generosity which always played an important role. Then, having found some of initial themes, work ends in an atmosphere of enjoyment, developed in rich and eclectic one variety which proves the sphere of influence of the sound colour at Andr Waignein.

Salute to a Hero was composed to honour the work of a truly deserving musician, teacher, and conductor. It opens with a noble brass fanfare with woodwind ornamentation. Following a short interlude the opening fanfare is again heard this time being played by the full band. A lyrical middle section follows, providing a beautiful and peaceful contrast to the powerful sound of the brass section. The fanfare makes one final appearance bringing the work to a triumphant close.

Il Cantico - Oliver Waespi
Commissioned by the Stadtharmonie Zurich Oerlikon-Seebach for the 2005 WASBE Conference in Singapore"Il Cantico" was inspired by the poem "Cantico di Frate Sole" (Canticle of Brother Sun) by St. Francis of Assisi. In this famous mystic poem, St. Francis expresses his gratitude to God for the creation of nature, the sun, the earth and the living beings."Il Cantico" is based on specific parts of St. Francis's poem. A slow, dreamlike song in the flute leads gradually to the appearance of the sun, the light energy of which is expressed by radiant, powerful music in the brass instruments. The next, slower part of the work is dedicated to the moon (sora luna), a sort of mirror of thesun, and to the stars (le stelle). The music becomes more thoughtful, leads to a calm sound field in the woodwinds and later to a mystic horn solo. Still during the slow part, several chord fragments flash up, thereby announcing the fast ultimate part of the work. This part is about the fire (frate focu) illuminating the night, some sort of representative of the sun on earth. Towards the end of the work, the sun theme is combined with the fire theme.Besides these images, a purely musical structure guides the development of Il Cantico. Almost the entire piece evolves from a basic four-tone cell which appears in the horns and flute at the beginning. Consequently, the work is mainly monothematic and structured in the form of a metamorphosis. The basic cell gradually leads to a rich melodic and harmonic development. This basic material is later completed by a new chord series belonging to the fire theme. In the conclusion both approaches are combined.

£164.99A Centennial Journey (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
A Centennial Journey was commissioned by the Norwegian ensemble Stavanger Musikkorps av 1919 to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2019. The work was premiered under conductor Morten E. Hansen at their Jubilee Concert in the Stavanger Konserthus on 28th September 2019. The piece opens dramatically with a sweeping melody on horns and saxophones under florid woodwind figuration, building to a majestic climax. A trio for the trombones calms the mood until the opening melody returns in a gentler style, eventually building to a busy molto vivo. The woodwind figuration continues over a series of brass trios until the main theme of the work appears on clarinets and euphoniums. This develops to introduce a change of key, featuring a long, hymn-like melody on clarinets and horns. The melody is then taken up by the full band, interspersed with sporadic brass fanfares. The opening of the molto vivo returns and leads to a return of the opening horn melody, building to a thrilling coda based on previous melodic material. Duration: 8.45

Once in Royal David's City is a Christmas carol originally written as a poem by Cecil Frances Alexander. The carol was first published in 1848 in her hymnbook Hymns for Little Children. A year later, the English organist Henry John Gauntlett discovered the poem and set it to music. According to The New Oxford Book of Carols, the text was conceived by Cecil Alexander after overhearing a group of her god children complaining about the dreariness of the catechism. Cecil masterfully took doctrines from the Apostle's Creed and simplified them for her hymns. Cecil wrote about 400 hymns in her lifetime, among which are All things bright and beautiful and There Is a Green Hill Far Away. She used the money for charitable purposes, and was a tireless advocate (and visitor) of the poor and sick. Henry John Gauntlett had spent the first half of his career as a lawyer before abandoning his practice to pursue music. He served as the organist at a number of leading London churches. Gauntlett was a prolific writer and is said to have composed over 1000 hymn tunes. He made tremendous contributions to the world of music, even inventing mechanical improvements to the organ. As a result, he was praised by the famous Felix Mendelssohn and was awarded an honorary doctorate in music from the Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1919, Arthur Henry Mann, organist at King's College (1876-1929), introduced an arrangement of Once in Royal David's City as the processional hymn for the service. In his version, the first stanza is sung unaccompanied by a boy chorister. The choir and then the congregation join in with the organ on succeeding stanzas. This has been the tradition ever since. It is a great honor to be the boy chosen to sing the opening solo--a voice heard literally around the world. In this arrangement for band accompaniment, the first five verses may be performed as directed by the conductor, with different groupings of instruments for each verse, i.e., Vs.1, A cappella; Vs. 2, Fl., Oboe, E.H., Bsns; Vs. 3 Cl., Saxes; Vs. 4, Brass; Vs. 5, All, and Vs. 6 as written with featured descant. This arrangement is one of the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with the David Willcocks Carols for Choir, Book 2 (#31).
