The Enemy God and the Dance of the Spirits - Sergei Prokofiev
The Russian ballet director Sergei Diaghilev commissioned many composers to write music for the theatre. This was what caused Serge Prokofiev to compose the four part Scytische Suite (also known as Ala and Lolli) in 1916, from which The Enemy God and the Dance of the Spirits can be heard on this CD. This suite is one of Prokofiev's first works, and received negative criticism following its first performance on account of its being "uncivilised". Prokofiev himself wrote after this first performance ". . . The timpani player beat the skin of the timpani to tatters, and the whole orchestra voiced a protest. A cellist complained that he only put up with the violence, createdby the blaring brass, on account of his sick wife and three children . . .".

This concert march with a solemn and festive character was commissioned to Gauthier Dupertuis by the the Musikkapelle Altheim e.V (Germany) to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The thematic material of the first section of the march is based on a three-note motif, proclaimed by the brass in the first measure. The second part of this theme presents a recurring motif throughout the piece. This first section has a festive and resolutely giocoso character. The trio presents a new, more lyrical and solemn theme. After a short divertimento based on the material from the first section, the theme returns in a majestic way, leading to a climactic finale. Altheim: a concert march perfect for a festive occasion!

Interlude - Wilhem Stenhammar
Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927) was a Swedish pianist, conductor and composer. His compositions include incidental music, operas, concerts, two symphonies and choral works. Initially influenced above all by Wagner and Bruckner, Stenhammar increasingly welcomed in his music a Nordic colour as well as melodic and rhythmic characters typical of Swedish folklore. Completed in 1921, the cantata Sngen (The Song) was Stenhammar's last major work, and its combination of harmonic richness and contrapuntal dexterity ensured it a warm reception.The Interlude connecting the two halves of the work is the only part frequently performed today. It begins by creating a serious and intimate atmosphere, then the music gradually unfolds in increasingly powerful sonorities. Towards the middle a noble brass chorale emerges, but neither this nor the following finely crafted climax manage to change the prevailing mood of subtle melancholy typical of late Romantic Scandinavian composers. This arrangement by Franco Cesarini will allow your audience to get to know this great composer unknown to most.

Throughout these long years of conducting he has had the opportunity to try many existing methods, evaluating their advantages and disadvantages.After a long time, he has decided to compile a collection of chorales for warm-ups, which are organized according to the criteria that he considers most effective.While working on his60 Warm-up Chorales for Concert Band, Franco Cesarini has always borne in mind that amateur musicians play for pleasure.He feels that it is extremely important that they have satisfaction at every moment of the rehearsal and not to start the rehearsal with needless "punishing" exercises. Nobody is really motivated to start playing with scales, long notes, or tricky rhythmical exercises. There is often a distinguished absentee in band rehearsals, namely music itself!Although this publication does not foresee a specific tempo for the chorales, they should often be performed rather slowly but without dragging.Dynamics are not indicated, so that the conductor has the opportunity to draw the attention of the musicians to his gestures and to make them react according to his indications.Timpani and bell parts have been added with the aim of not leaving the percussionists completely inactive during the warm-up phase, but can also be omitted.The chorales are written in four parts (SATB) and are also playable in smaller groups.
