The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes.The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. Inspired by two folk songs from the arranger's Dutch heritage, is a piece that combines both lyrical and upbeat sections. "Daar waren twee koningskinderen" (There Were Two Royal Children) is the opening lyrical movement which displays the talents of both the wind and brass sections. The piece then moves into "Toen ik op Nederlands bergen stond" (I Once Stood on the Netherland's Hills). This is a fast movement in 6/8 and features the percussion section. A great arrangement for young band.

"Maritime March" is a "jaunty" British-style march opening up in the key of C natural minor (Aeolian mode). Sixteenth notes combined with simple syncopations highlight the second strain in a question-and-answer section that pits the woodwinds against the brass. The traditional trio moves to the key of E-flat and features the low clarinets in unison with the French horns. This is a very appealing march that will be easy to put together and really make your young band shine. This piece correlates to Book 2, Page 15.
