Defiance - George Sweet
A calm opening sets the mood for the piece before it moves into an uptempo theme. The piece contains lots of different instrumental colors with interplay between brass, woodwinds, and percussion. Mercury Rising was commissioned by sinfonisches blasorchester wehdel and its conductor Thomas Ratzek, to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2018. They premiered this piece in their half-century concert on 2nd November 2018 in the Bremerhaven Stadttheater in Germany. Designed as a virtuosic and lively opener, Mercury Rising opens with nervous energy and driving, syncopated rhythms in a blaze of colour. The horns and saxophones then introduce a broad melody, which the trumpets subsequently take up after a change of tonality. A quieter moment introduces a distant fanfare on muted horns over bubbling semiquavers in the low clarinets. This is interrupted by a passionate tenor melody but soon returns on the full brass section, accompanied by echoes of the opening woodwind figuration, and is extended to bring the piece to a triumphant close. An Americana-style ballad follows that is tender, lyrical and poignant. This segues into a "no holds barred" blues section representing the mighty Mississippi. This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes.The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section. From the opening fanfare, this piece will put you in the holiday spirit! Joyful World is an adaptation of the familiar Christmas carol Joy to the World. The piece opens with fragments of the familiar carol cleverly woven into a spirited fanfare. This is followed by a rendition featuring a regimental snare part with playful harmonies. In the third section, the meter changes to create a beautiful 6/4 ballad, leading to a hint of the familiar Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee tune before returning to the original melody. The piece ends with a spirited brass flourish.

"Maritime March" is a "jaunty" British-style march opening up in the key of C natural minor (Aeolian mode). Sixteenth notes combined with simple syncopations highlight the second strain in a question-and-answer section that pits the woodwinds against the brass. The traditional trio moves to the key of E-flat and features the low clarinets in unison with the French horns. This is a very appealing march that will be easy to put together and really make your young band shine. This piece correlates to Accent on Achievement Book 2, Page 15.
