Sunrise at Angel's Gate (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

This piece depicts the refined beauty of the Grand Canyon at sunrise and sunset. These are the best times to view the Canyon with the sun low in the sky casting shadows that give depth and form to the vast panorama. Angel's Gate is one of the many named rock formations in the canyon. The composer has tried to depict the sights and sounds of dawn, birdsong in the early morning sky and the gradual revelation of the Canyon itself as sunlight reaches into its rocky depths.Towards the end of the piece, to the sound of a tolling bell, we are however reminded of the dangers that the beauty of the Grand Canyon so cleverly hides.Duration: 10:40

Et in terra Pax (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

This piece was commissioned by the Concert Band Vlamertinge and is a plea for peace: the title translates as Peace on Earth. This is expressed by means of the vocal contribution expected from the performers. In various places of the piece you can recognize, the words Et In Terra Pax, an appeal for peace, at first jumbled together but later more rhythmically structured, developing into synchronized massed voices. The work starts with a pentatonic theme based on the notes D, E, G, A and C (taken from 'ConCErtbAnD VlAmErtinGE' and the name of the conductor, NiCk VAnDEnDriessChe). A somewhat sad melody is developed during an orchestral climax which leads to the first explosion of sound (measure 62 onwards). Suddenly the opening measures are recaptured, albeit with a differently coloured sound: the words Et in Terra Pax bring the first movement to a close. A restless Allegro follows which abruptly stops and is replaced by a calming chorale-like passage. A narrator reads aloud the poem 'Sonnet' by the young poet Charles Hamilton Sorley, who was killed during World War I. This poem fittingly puts into words the cruelty and senselessness of war. After the expanded recapitulation of the allegro, the broad, almost infinite atmosphere of the beginning returns. Clarinet and English horn play the pentatonic opening theme once more, this time broadly, while the words Et in Terra Pax are repeated again and again by the rest of the ensemble. The composer has purposely avoided all forms of aggression and bombastic sounds regularly used in works about war. Fear of violence and destruction can be heard and felt during the allegro passages. The charged opening makes way in the end for hope: May peacefulness replace cruelty in everyday life, too.Duration: 13:45

Leviathan (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Cesarini, Franco

The leviathan, a demoniacal sea monster that appears as a dragon or serpent, is considered in the Old Testament to be the embodiment of evil. The defeat of the demon is prophesied in Isaiah 27:1: "On that day the Lord will punish with his cruel sword, his mighty and powerful sword Leviathan that primeval sea-serpent, that writhing serpent Leviathan, and slay the monster of the deep ."The composer's main goal is to create an atmosphere thick with agitation, tumult and extreme tension rather than express specific events musically. The monstrous form of the leviathan slowly emerges from the abyss of primordial sounds at the start of the piece, recalling the eternal conflict between good and evil.Duration: 8.45

JOURNEY THROUGH A JAPANESE LANDSCAPE (Percussion Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Musgrave, Thea

Concerto for Solo Marimba and Wind Orchestra. The four movements of Journey through a Japanese Landscape are based on a series of haiku which represents an emotional journey through the four seasons. The three haiku chosen for each of the seasons provide a setting and an event; thus, the gently undulating spring sea is the background for the free, improvisatory character of the skylark. The summer grasses have buried the glorious dreams of ancient warriors and after a violent storm, a distant memory of a march is heard. An autumnal fog envelops a colossal Buddha and a lonely watcher sounds one gong after another while a cricket acts as a grave keeper. Glass wind chimes introduce the frozen winter landscape. The march returns, then sleet and snow build to a big storm. Out of the silence that follows, echoes of the first movement suggest the return of spring and so, rebirth. (Grade 4) Duration: 23:00

Jubilant Prelude Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Jubilant Prelude' is an orchestration of the 'Preludium over Psalm 150' originally composed for organ by Toon Hagen. Since 1998 Toon Hagen has been organ-player of the 'Grote or Sint Micha?lskerk' in Zwolle (the Netherlands). He has written several 'contemporary' compositions for organ.'Jubilant Prelude' has a capricious character by the use of irregular measures and its many measure changes. The structure of the Prelude is that of a fugue and is based on motives from the psalm. After the first climax, which is both dynamic and harmonic, the theme in the Andante Jubiloso is clearly audible and it is alternated with erratic motifs. Tension increases until at last the psalm itself is heard in all its glory. The melody of the psalm sounds as a cantus firmus in tenor register, with motifs in ornamentation for saxophones, bugles and trumpets. The finale, like the prelude is capricious and vehement. The instrumentation for concert band was made by Wim Rouw. It is particularly colourful and has a surprising role for the percussion section. 04:30
