Inspired by the ever-popular snack, Pop! is a grade 3 band piece by composer Tawnie Olson that imitates the sounds popping popcorn beginning with that first, single kernel to the exploding sounds of an overflowing pot. Through the use of imitation, additive processes, playful articulation, and the development of tune fragments, Olson crafted a piece that is relatable and great fun to play. Pop! also has an aleatoric passage that gives young performers the opportunity to co-compose by improvising sounds that suggest of pop of popcorn in the making. BandQuest, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece. Many BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. A musical tale of a lone watchman, vigilant at his outpost by the desolate sea. His quiet thoughts of home and loved ones are soon displaced by the sudden appearance a fleet of invaders. The tempo increases as the ships draw near and he sounds the alarm; soon the battle is on! Aggressive music reflects the fierce conflict as both sides push back and forth before the battle turns in favor of the village guard. As the invaders sail back into the night, the watchman returns to his post and the quiet sounds of the waves, his thoughts of home returning as he sets his gaze on the horizon once again.

Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791-1864) was a German opera composer of Jewish origins, who has been described as perhaps the most successful stage composer of the nineteenth century. From 1831 until his death, he remained a dominating figure in the world of opera. His contemporary Hector Berlioz summed up his public career claiming that he 'has not only the luck of being talented, but the talent to be lucky'. His works made him the most frequently performed composer at the world's leading opera houses in the nineteenth century. Giacomo Meyerbeer composed his opera Le Prophte in 1849. In this opera a coronation is preceded by a splendid march. Although the opera itself is rarely performed, the Coronation March has gained a place in the concert repertoire.Franco Cesarini's arrangement for concert band of the Coronation March stands out for its skillful instrumentation which underlines the powerful sounds of this classic concert march.
