Sir Dirk Bross, music director at the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, is a versatile composer of orchestral and symphonic repertoire, chamber music, film & musical. His compositions are performed worldwide by the most prominent orchestras and soloists. About the new series of 10 "Musical Postcards" for wind band, Dirk says the following: "Composing is a commitment; it is my life's mission. For me composing means creating a vacuum around myself and allowing myself to be submerged by impressions. It is a continual struggle between fantasy and reality, between dream and reality. Out of chaos of sounds and emotions I try to order my thoughts by juggling shreds of melodies, original chords, striking sound colours and alternating rhythms. Melody, harmony, rhythm and sound colours are finally balanced to generate a harmonious universe. This series of ten 'Musical Postcards' are a reflection of my travels, thoughts, discoveries and musical career so far, which has brought me around the globe. Commissioned by the Japan Band Clinic Committee of Yamaha for the Nemu Band Directors Clinic in Nemu no Sato, May 18-20, 1997.The surprising title of this work is an indication of its content. By combining the somewhat similar names 'Nemu no Sato' and 'Susato' into a new word, Jan Van der Roost has produced a significant and interesting subject. The Yamaha corporation has extensive facilities in Nemu no Sato, Japan, including a concert hall, recording studios, hotel and so on. Concerts, workshops, clinics and other events are held here, including the annual Nemu Band Directors Clinic, which consists of numerous musical events. Jan Van der Roost served as guest conductor andspeaker in 1994. He was invited again for the 1997 clinic, this time with a composition assignment. The difficulty level of his new piece was to be Grade 2 - 3 bands. With this in mind, Mr. Van der Roost strove to create a renaissance-like sound. Simultaneously he wished to create a tribute to Tielman Susato who, like Jan Van der Roost, lived and worked in Antwerp in the 16th century. The first performance of Nemu-Susato was conducted by the composer, performed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Band, and took place during the Nemu Band Directors Clinic on May 19, 1997.

This three-movement concerto (Allegro con brio, Espressivo and Vivacissimo) was commissioned by the famous Japanese euphonium player Tamao Araki. It demands a high level of instrumental proficiency from the soloist, while the accompaniment is less demanding and accessible for a band of an average level. Brooklet is one of the movements from Grieg's Lyric Pieces for Solo Piano opus 62. Information for the conductor: Brooklet is an technically advanced work for solo piano. In this arrangement, technical passages are simplified by overlapping and doubling some of the parts. To master the technical challenges and make it sound effortless, it is important to pay close attention to balance and precision. Some of the parts also have alternative parts added which can lower the technical challenges a bit. The normal instrumentation are Clarinet 1-2-3, but there is also an "optional" part for Solo Clarinet. This is included on the same sheet as Clarinet 1. Both parts can stand alone or be played together. (i.e. The Solo Clarinet part can be played in addition to Clarinet 1, in whole or in part if desired, or it can replace Clarinet 1 entirely, using only Solo Clarinet and Clarinet 2 and 3.). From bar 5 to bar 13, there is a suggested solo for Solo Clarinet. If played by Solo Clarinet, please omit Clarinet 1, 2 & 3 for these bars.
