Handel called Britain 'the ringing isle' because when he moved to London, he heard bells ringing everywhere: great bells in church towers, and handbells in some of the first private houses he visited. The sound of people 'ringing the changes' is a peculiarly British sound of celebration, and it seems a good starting point for a piece celebrating British musical life. Within The Ringing Isle, Dove incorporates some traditional change-ringing patterns, from 'Grandsire Doubles', 'Oxford Treble Bob Minor' and his own version of 'Plain Bob Major'. Handel's phrase also conjures up an image of a magical island, and so this is how Dove envisaged how it must have been to approach Britain from an ocean voyage.

Many lost their lives in accidents throughout history, and many families lost their fathers. A Miner's Tale describes the beginning of a shift, marked by the signal on the wooden board. The foreman and the miners begin their arduous work underground. Suddenly, danger strikes, leading to a terrible collapse.Trapped beneath the rubble, the miners are overwhelmed by fear, despair, and loneliness. Only their camaraderie and the memory of their loved ones keep them going. In the darkest moment, in the dim light of their fading mining lamp, a vision of Saint Barbara - the patron saint of miners - appears before them. Shortly thereafter, they hear the sound of approaching rescue. The Sparta army is well-known in the time of the ancient Greek that the warriors would never lay down their weapons for any reason. The theme from the beginning of the piece strongly declares that the warriors are always willing to fight for their homeland. The slow movement reflects the feeling of the warriors when they are far away from their loved one due to their duty. The composers intently uses the harmony that gives a hopeful feeling but also painful at the same time. The audience can hear the bell during the piece. It is the symbol of the clock towers which located in every cities. Everytime that the warriors leaves a city, the sound of the bell becomes softer and softer until it disappears. Only at the end of the piece that the bell rings only one last time after the majestical theme. It's the bell of victory!

'Spirit of Independence' was commissioned by the Koninklijke Fanfare 'Onafhankelijkheid' ('Independence') from Wiekevorst (Belgium) on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. The piece depicts an enthusiastic amateur music club, practicing and making music together in an attentive and companionable atmosphere. The conductor has the good habit of trying to improve the sound of the fanfare by means of practicing chorales and hymns. Jan Van der Roost has used these facts in the dynamic concert piece 'Spirit of Independence': a chorale-like middle section is surrounded by music bubbling full of energy.
