While teaching in India, composer Lindsay Boyd became acquainted with the fundamentals of Northern Hindustani music. The result is this intriguingly unique work for wind band that incorporates distinctive sounds of India. The "drone" sound of the tambura is available as a free download online, or may be substituted with a marimba. The vocal chanting in the piece is a representation of the syllables used by a tabla player when learning to play this exotic drum.This is a wonderful piece for expanding the musical horizons of your players and audience!

The Error Detection: Exercises for the Instrumental Conductor texts are designed to improve the critical listening skills of the conducting student through real music excerpts that contain planted errors in the parts for the conductor to find. Both books contain 54 excerpts from standard band literature from grades 2 to grade 6 so students gain knowledge of real music they can use later, not just non-musical etudes. The teacher's edition contains over 350 pages of materials with analysis sheets and answer keys to help the conducting teacher to easily evaluate the student's progress. The teacher's edition also comes with a CD-ROM containing all of the instrumental parts for allof the musical excerpts as PDF files, so the teacher can just print the amount of parts needed for each example, and the examples are arranged to sound satisfying with as little as five players. In her tone poem City Rain, Judith Zaimont captures the spirit and vitality of a summer shower as it falls on a busy city street. This piece draws a lively picture of a passing storm and is unified by the jazz-like rhythmic motive based on the pattern of the title words city rain. Zaimont paints the image of rain through the rhythmic motive and the use of body percussion and alternative instruments (such as tapping patterns on music stands). As the music unfolds, each section of the band is spotlighted at different times. The instruments also join together to produce layers of sound that create interesting and complex jazz chords. BandQuest, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. Schiller's text of 1785 was partially used by Beethoven in1824 when he did finish the 4th movement of his 9th Symphony. The melody has later been used in very many contexts. As the anthem of the European Union, a lot of movies (A clockwork Orange, Die Hard, etc.), music to video games, as the anthem of Rhodesia, as rebel song in Chile and by FIFA. Therefore, it can be used in most settings This Young Band arrangement focuses on the main melody. In the original, the B part is repeated in each variation, but to get three variations (out of four), this repetition has been cut. The first variation should be played as soft as possible, but still with a nice sound. Crescendo to forte(f) and going back to pp should be as a surprise.

James Rae is the man who put fun into woodwind and brass teaching. His many compositions, especially in the jazz and blues idioms, have often featured on examination syllabuses. Recent years have seen his publications of easy flexible ensembles for younger players and now he turns his attention to the wind band. In his series The Concert Band Collection, he has written exciting new pieces for the standard concert band line up. Attention is given to each instrument so that the technical and musical requirements do not exceed UK Grade 2. An optional piano part will provide "stuffing" and moral support for the young players who will quickly enjoy James' catchy and imaginative music. Each volume contains two titles. Buffalo RockThis piece has been specifically composed for bands in their early stages of development. All instrumental parts have been written in comfortable keys and ranges with all clarinet parts staying entirely in the low register. After a short, powerful introduction, the music immediately kicks in to a driving rock mode, setting the scene for the remainder of the piece. Strong rhythmic playing is required from all sections of the band in order to achieve a solid performance. A Royal PortraitThis piece is very regal in style and portrays all the pomp and circumstance that surrounds a high-profile state occasion. It is to be performed with a full, warm sound and players must resist the temptation to overblow as this could have a detrimental effect on tone quality and intonation. As with Buffalo Rock, the instrumental parts have been written in comfortable keys and ranges with all clarinet parts staying entirely in the low register.

All Cried Out
At the beginning of the 1980s Alison Moyet was discovered by Vince Clarke, who - in search of greater independence - had left the successful band Depeche Mode. The soulful singing style of Moyet and the electronic, innovative pop that Clarke made melded well together in the group Yazoo with hits such as Only You and Don't Go. However, after a number of years Moyet went her own way and forged a solo career, during which she demonstrated a somewhat more traditional sound. She recorded several covers (such as The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face and That Ole Devil Called Love) but she also wrotefine songs herself, such as Love Resurrection and, of course, the expressive song AllCried Out. This arrangement by Peter Kleine Schaars does justice to the atmosphere of the original song.

A humorous program number that plays with the listener's expectations, it is technically simple, but uses unusual sound resources (clapping hands, rapping heels, novel percussion sounds) o produce a work that delights the ear and challenges the mind. Castlebay - Gene Milford
This fresh new setting of two traditional Scottish folk songs, Will Ye No Come Back Again and Keel Row, was written in honor of its namesake, the Scottish village Castlebay. Composer Gene Milford has crafted a well-scored offering for contest/festival performance that is reminiscent of English-style band pieces. After the striking opening, the piece moves to the more fiddle-like Keel Row in a lilting 6/8. All of the sections of the ensemble get to shine and the band will sound formidable with this piece.
