Serengeti Sunrise (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wasson, John
"Serengeti Sunrise" was conceived as a musical portrait of an early morning safari across the Serengeti in Africa. Beginning with a bold fanfare, a low ominous ostinato pattern supports a graceful melody, signifying a traveling caravan. Triumphal March (Concert Band - Score and Parts)
The Gran Finale from the second act of Verdi's famous opera Aida, composed in 1869, is a complex part of the drama as in one single scene many different characters, allwith contrasting emotions, appear onstage at the same time. The scene opens in Ancient Egypt when the Egyptian general Radames and his troops, which have just beaten Ethiopia, come marching in. The Egyptians sing a celebration song for him and there is a sound of trumpets playing the triumphal march to receive the hero. The well-known triumphal march, transcribed in this edition for concert band by Franco Cesarini, closely follows Verdi's original score and will bring any concert to a dramatic close. 05:30

Historians disagree, however, as to whether his majesty was merely showing his appreciation of the music or whether, as one story goes, he had been startled out of a sound sleep. Whichever, the entire audience followed the regal example, thereby instituting a tradition which has persisted for more than two centuries. Agathe Backer Grndahl's 'Ballade' can best be described as a Romantic character piece. Such one-movement piano pieces with titles that loosely indicate a mood/idea made out a central genre in the 19th century. In Backer Grndahl's production, several of these are grouped under the term 'fantasy pieces'. There are six collections with a total of 48 fantasy pieces on her opus list and 'Ballade' is from the first of these (Op. 36), published in 1895. 'Ballade' is a broader work than the other fantasy pieces. It is built around a dramatic theme that keeps returning after episodes with strongly contrasting thematic material.The arrangement is close to Backer Grndahl's original composition. It is transposed a semitone down: from E flat minor to D minor. The arrangement contains some challenging passages and is well-suited for amateur bands of a certain level. The instrumentation makes no special demands beyond normal concert band instrumentation and will sound just as good in small as in large bands.
